Insurance - broker of direct???

Getting my first insurance policy. My best quote is from a broker, whom also told me who is underwriting the policy. Is it ok practice to call the underwriters directly (I have their website and number) and ask them can they beat the quote? (So they don't have to pay commission to the broker I guess)

The underwriters won't necessarily deal direct, certainly not on the same terms they give the broker. They pass admin costs to brokers because then they don't have to deal with the dirty, dumbass members of the public who know sod all about insurance.
They might have a direct operation that you could call - nothing ventured, nothing gained.
