OK. so here's the thing. My processor was running hot. I put in a new heatsink and fan last night, and the temperature has come down, but the monitoring software (SmartGuardian) still shows the temp to be 90 C, so still too hot. The processor is not overclocked. The BIOS is set to shut down if the temperature goes over 85 C. So the question is, would you trust the Bios or the monitoring software, cos one of them sure isn't working properly.
Also, any ideas on how to sort this if the temperature is too high? Or is my processor

Have you checked the heat tolerances of the processor?.
How long have you had the PC?, does it switch off randomly or through any process intensive applications or games?.
Have you tried any other monitoring software?, to see if the results match with Smart Guardian’s. If you haven't try ZDNET and see if the results are the same with a different program.
The BIOS may well be measuring internal CPU core temperature, and your monitoring program is most likely measuring external CPOU temperature.
Typically there can be a 10 deg C difference between the 2, so your internal temp may only by 80deg, which is why it hasn't shut down.
Either way, it seems fairly hot - but you haven't told us what processor it is.
Ensure there's plenty of airflow through the case - make sure no vent holes are obstructed or blocked with dust. Consider changing to round IDE cables rather than ribbons and check that the case fan(s) is/are working and blowing/sucking the right way.

The processor is an AMD 2000XP. I have read that 80 C should be the upper limit for the chip, but this has been exceeded according to the monitoring software. Funny thing is, there have been no glitches at all, everything seems to be running fine. The PC has never shut itself down.

pdV6 - The only fans in the case are on the processor, the graphics card and in the Power supply - there is no separate case fan. Maybe I should get one?

Almost certainly, then, the monitoring s/w is reading the temp from a probe on the m/b below the CPU. This will typically read about 10 deg lower than the internal temp of the CPU core, so you're probably just about ok.

No fans in an Athlon case?
I'd be tempted to fit one or two (suck in at the front and out at the back) if there's any space to fit them.
{edited to add:} the default being one at the back if that's all there's room for)

Hhhmmm. Well, I've been playing with a PCChips one which is another one of these 'value' MB's that are stuffed into cheap machines from PC World etc.
I went through the same process (it had an XP1900). Ran really hot according to all the monitoring programs. Changed heat sink. Same temperatures.
I ran Prime95 to thrash it and the indicated temps went up to 100C which is above max operating temp. No problems at all (for 3 hours). I can only conclude that the readings are wrong.
My XP1900 runs at 38 C in my MSI KT3 Ultra board

Running big fan/heatsink on CPU, inlet & outlet fans in MOBO area - in the upper area PSU has inlet and outlet fans and there's a 3rd outlet fan drawing air away from Drives. All 5 drives use round ATA cables
Case is discontinued humungous size server type thingy from Maplins - about 3 yrs old.
Don't often check temps - but on occasions I've been bios side that's the sort of reading I'm getting - Highest I've ever seen was 48C after a 6 hour session.
Max temp is said to be 90C for XP2100 and below 85C for XP2200 and up.
