Does a Michelin Star apply to restaurant or chef ?

We are lucky to have in Birkenhead a Michelin starred restaurant that is for sale, however in the sales info the Michelin Star is not mentioned - just curious

No mention of it, it's unusual because it's a tiny 12 cover one with a long waiting list for dinner. Owned by the chef and voted by the times in the top 5 in the country - £400k

It's quite hard to retain the star(s) after the chef has departed.

Yes just the restaurant but as another poster has said it will be difficult to retain it (so will still get bookings for long period)

Think this is the one in Oxton Village, Shane it's for sale as I wanted to try it (we have NONE in the whole of greater manchester!)

i could be wrong but don't things like this have to be renewed every 12 months, and before the place is issued a Michelin Star the restaurant will apply and someone will come in at random (generally more than once)and award it based on service and food?

i could be wrong but years ago i worked in a pub trying to get a Rosette award and that was how it was done

Any idea why its for sale? I have been before and its spectacular.

Gutted if it goes as you get the feel the chef is its heart

I'd heard House & the French just missed out this year (shame as they are the only likely ones in Mcr)

Technically belongs to the restaurant. But is generally re-reviewed if there has been a change of chef.

The restaurant is the chef - it's tiny and in his own style I doubt it could be run without him. It's possible he is staying on after selling it but I doubt it earns enough to pay chef and owner.

Hi there, I had the pleasure of dining in the French on Thursday night. It is every bit as good as Rogans l'enclume in Cartmel.

The Aumbry in Prestwich is also very very good, chef is Mary Ellen McTague formally of the Fat Duck. I have eaten there several times and it is fantastic.

Agree, Aumbry is up there with most of the 1 stars I've tried.

I only ask as aiden was behind the church green in my village and it's not great either, IMO. They tried to bring fine dining to an area that prob doesn't have just the right level of demand, and after a few years recently rebranded as a grill. Sure fire sign it wasn't doing well.

Apologies, I was referring to Rogan's The French and it's brasserie. Not that I believe Rogan actually chefs at The French.
