Running without it is a fools game. You can do it on a race engine because you are always flat out, and never cruising at a light load when vacuum has the biggest affect on MPG and this is typically the situation most TVRS are in most of the time (as in big engine- light body, low engine load). Another 8 or 10 degrees advance under light load improves the engine efficiency without any down sides.If you do away with it make sure the plenum is blanked off.

Same here. My vacuum diaphragm was cracked. I was able to suck and blow air through it. New vac unit from Clev Trev made no significant difference to discernible performance. I don't know about fuel economy!
