A very unique van
Discussion
Hi Guys .. this had my head totally battered .. any help would be very much appreciated..
I have a 06 reg 3.5 95 LDV Maxus panel van .. have owned without problem for the past 4 years .. it has covered 44800 miles but has developed a fault..
I have had 2 mobile mechanics and the main dealers scratching and shaking there heads ( don't have a clue )
The van will only start with a sniff of damp start .. and now out of the blue when driving just cuts out ..
I have replaced the cam sensor ,crack sensor, fuel sensor, fuel filter and housing ,Glow plugs , fuel lines , fuel sender unit ,I have had a leak back test and compression test done..
The van is currently at DAF they said it maybe the fuel pump or the rail valve as there is only 100lbs of pressure at the rail on cranking..but were not sure as they have never seen this problem , so do I have a unique van ??
Many thanks in advance...

Try asking for help here, or asking for a competent diesel tech near you which is maybe a better option.
Going down the main dealer route could get very costly, as most are completely clueless and will gladly charge you a fortune when they havent a clue what they're doing

When it cuts out, is it sudden, or does it miss a bit and start to slow down beforehand? If it just cuts out suddenly, more than likely electrical. Doubt it has a rev counter, but if so, this would just go back to zero immediately with an electrical fault.
My mate's Movano had something not too dissimilar, very difficult to start first thing, and would cut out randomly, turned out to be something bizarre like the water level or water temp sender.

Sounds like they have found the problem and now have two possible causes. There is low pressure in the fuel rail which could be due to a weak fuel pump or faulty pressure-relief valve.
It's strange that they have never seen the problem before, it's hardly unique.

This should be picked up by fault diagnostics. There is low pressure in the fuel rail which could be due to a weak fuel pump or faulty pressure-relief valve.

Unless there is a secondary problem, i.e. faulty fuel rail pressure sensor or the pressure sensor itself is causing the issue. Being 06 it will be at least unit injector, if not common rail.
Relief valve should be in the pump, so probably a pump change anyway.
Thanks for all the input guys .. got the van back today and got a mobile mechanic to change over the fuel rail .. Fired up straight away .. have left it standing for about a hour and will now not start .. just ordered a recon fuel pump from europarts £270 ..
I think it is defo a fuel pressure fault as when I brought it home this morning it cut out coming up a steep hill .. restarted it on damp start and kept the revs above 2000rpm without any problem ..
Will update when I have the new pump fitted ..

Dealers just change expensive bits in the hope they will strike luckyGoing down the main dealer route could get very costly, as most are completely clueless and will gladly charge you a fortune when they havent a clue what they're doing

Its a Bosch system, most diesel specialists are Bosch and Delphi agents, not cheap but do know what they are on about

I am one of the seventeen people in this country who are not on Facebook and I don't want to join. Could you give me a different route to that page or do a cut-and-paste and put it here.https://www.facebook.com/groups/ldvcampersandvans/
just had a proper diesel mechanic take a look at my van .. the problem is the fuel rail .. luck has it I bought one off e-bay for £35 a while ago as I wanted a pressure sensor off it.. have changed the rail over and so far fingers crossed the van is perfect ..
With regards to the engine guys .. LDV did put the ford tranny engines in the convoys way back .. the maxus vans have the Italian VM engines same as the London TX4 taxis and Chrysler voyager..

t to start ,virtually impossible, after much trying this and that we put a non return valve on the fuel feed to the pump ,probl solved.
LDV is fitted with the "IMO" better VM engine
