If i sit on the motorway at 4000 rpm as opposed to 3000, to do 70 in my car means 4000 rpm due to a 1.1 litre engine, if its regularly serviced will it be ok doing this long term?

Yes it will wear it quicker, but the main bearings and seals on a modern engine are probably good for many hundreds of thousands of miles so it's highly unlikely that it will make any difference.

Does this sound a bit odd to anyone else? 4000rpm at just 70mph. I know it's only a shopping trolley, but surely there's no need for it to rev that high at such a low speed in top gear?

sound legit from a little engine, 6000rpm would mean 105mph, a realistic rev limit/top speed for 1.1l car?

If the engine speed was any less at 70 it would struggle on even the slightest hill lol.

Ok, fair enough then, just so long as there's nothing wrong, I'll wish you the best with your motoring (and enough luck to afford a much bigger engine in the near future, if only for the sake of your sanity wobble)

Our Suzuki Swift Sport was over 3.5k at 75 or so. Some small cars really really need a 6th gear

My 2.0L hatcback is doing about 3500 RPM at 70mph, so it doesn't seem unreasonable for a 1.1L engined car.

Sounds like a little fiat, my sporting does around 4k at 70, it could really do with a 6th gear. I think theoretically (Or for people with a 16v swap) max possible is 130 at 7200 limiter.

ETA: Even the more powerful punto sporting 16v with a 6 speed box has the same ratio for 6th as the 5 speeds have for 5th. I'm not sure what fiat were thinking...

You do know you've got 5 other gears, don't you?

Add this to the OP's list of silly questions, such as 'Please explain magic', 'How dangerous is mountain biking?', and my personal favourite, 'Who not to beep at'.

Given the number of replies I've had, I'm going to make a conscious effort to see what rpm my car does at 70. I shan't report back (no one is that sad).

My wky Audi A3 1.6 FSI turns over 3K revs at 70. It has a 6th gear - what a pointless effort, Audi.

(1) A Fiat Sporting will not hit 130mph - the driver would soil himself at about 100mph and the engine would explode at 110mph.

(2) A car that is at 4000rpm at 70 in top DOES have a 6th gear - it is called Neutral. That tiny engine will be doing its best to slow the car down on any incline, so you could spend half the time going faster out of gear.

(3) I hope for the OP's sake that the car in question is not (a) new and (b) bought on finance. If either of those things is the case, he will never recover from a barage of "What not buy a second hand BMW 3 series/Clio 180/MX5?"

The stupid gearing is an emissions thing - every gear (including 6th) has to start quite low to allow it to be used for low-speed cruising. The result is at that the gearing makes no sense at high speeds unless you have a very high top speed and plenty of power.

I bet 6th in the Audi is available from about 40mph. Pointless to anyone but an emissions tester.

The gearing on my car is absurd. It has 7 gears and will (in auto mode) take 6th at 30mph and 7th (which is an overdrive) at about 45mph. Given that it's top speed is around 170 and is, of course, reached in 6th, those are some pretty long gears!

Indeed, I drove an A5 with the 2.0TDI engine and it suggests that you change up into 6th around 40mph if you follow the advice of the green arrows on the dashboard!

A blanket statement that may be correct in a few cases, but it's certainly not a hard and fast rule. A close ratio box may have a tall first and low top, but it's certainly not designed to improve emissions.
