Am i right in thinking the early 2.8 Tasmins had a 4-speed Cortina gearbox? Would it be worthwhile fitting a type 9 to one of these early cars or are the 4 speeds ok?

What are the positives and negatives of each?

I've a 4 speed and often it could do with a 5th on the motorway. From what I understand the type 9 doesnt fit straight in, some adjustments need to be made somewhere but cant remember as well as not fitting the gearstick hole.
Hopefully someone will be on soon to say for sure. I'd be interested in doing mine if it us easy enough.

The FHC looks a decent car, Especially for that kind of money...Littlewooly on here did a 5 speed conversion on my old 280i...Apparently it wasn't too much grief as i was under the impression that the bell housing needed modifying and the output shafts changing.

I always found the 4 speed adequate..I drove my 280i to Yorkshire from South East London without the need of another gear.

I do believe that the early front bumpers are still obtainable from T.E.T mouldings....Cheers...Ziga

Putting a type 9 in my 280i was the best conversion ever, car pulls harder in 1st and 2nd and cruises really nicely in 5th and the engine doesn't drone either at 60-65mph. Really changed the car, I also fitted a quick shift to the type 9 so the gear change is a lot shorter.

Hi

The previous owner was Andy "Mr Sheen".

I last saw the car just before my accident over two yeras ago. It was in a sorry state then sitting on four flat wheels, the paint work was very flat and it had strange cracks running along the top of the wings.
Most of the pics in the advert were taken way before then.

It has been sitting for at least four years outside, with out a cover so I think it will need a total respray as well as the gearbox at least.

The damage at the front looked like a simple car parking bump, which caused the front bumper to be cracked (Reparable if needed) There was some slight cracking to the body behind.
The wheels were also in a sorry condition.

Its a shame because when Andy had the car it looked OK.

Andy

Reference the type 9 box into the 280i I will just add that the original dog legged 4 speed gearstick was hitting chassis rail when trying for 5th gear where as the quickshift stick now fitted is straight so is not an issue. It did have a new bush for he gearstick to pivot on.
The other slight mod was to drill a large access hole in underside of Bell housing about 85mm diameter, that enabled us to get the bolts in to refix to the gearbox, just made up a cover for it afterwards and screwed in place but watch the length of the bolts coz of flywheel.

Thanks guys, its mad the amount of information you can dig up on here. I notice a few of you are quite local, are any of you going to the Herts / Beds meet on Sunday at Shuttleworth?

Mr Sheen - I notice your old Cappuccino looks very similar to my girlfriends (see random TVR pics thread). They are great fun little cars!
