This may well be covered in Steve Heath's book or previously here, my problem being that as I have no clue what is is I don't know what to look for.

I've found a pipe on the nearside of my S3's engine bay that isn't connected at one end, with no idea of where it's meant to be connected - can't see anywhere for it to go. Other end connects to what looos to my untrained eye like a ford sensor of some description, then continuation of pipe disappears back down parallel to the cabin wall.

I'm probably being rather stupid and missing someone obvious, but if someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Is it a pipe (small dia), hose (medium dia 3/4" or more), or a duct?

when you say ford sensor do you mean the aluminium thing with Ford stamped on it about the size of a camera film (35mm film)? If you do it joins to a T connection over by the right hands side cylinder cover... or it does on mine... near the coil to be more exact.....

I'll say a 'hose' for now (diameter approx 1/2"), will take a few snaps tonight and try to figure out how to post them here tomorrow. Thanks for the replies!

Off to replace some cooling hoses now after incompentent garage broke them while doing some engine work (grrrrr!), so should be enhancing my knowledge of hoses today anyway!

OK, taken some photos, hope these show it well enough for you guys. As the plenum has been mentioned, it might be worth me saying that the (useless, non-specialist) garage were unable to stop the nearside engine bank from running rich after some engine work, and claim the pipe was detached when they got the car.

Not completely sure how to post photos here, so posting some links to a place I can put the pictures, let me know if anyone has a problem viewing them.

..well they're big enough to see that's for sure..

..anyone on a slow connection, these pics are 2304x1728 pixels... I'm still waiting for the 1st one to finish downloading.

Cheers
Matt

Edited to add.. phew.. 1.33 mb for the first one.

Its a standard thickwall rubber vacuum/fuel hose.. one of the chaps who still has an S will be able to find its destination easily enough.

That's the oil breather pipe. It should lead down to the air filter at the front of the car, on the side of the filter should be a pipe to attach it to.

However if a new filter has been fitted they need to be modified to add the pipe connector to them. It may be that a new filter has been put on and the previous owner didn't know what to do with the pipe.

Personally I have removed the pipe altogether and added an oil breather filter onto the side of the oil cap on the rockewr cover. You can get them from Halfwits or places like Demon Tweaks.

The other option is a catcher tank.

without having a look at my car it looks like the fuel return pipe.

If it is the same as mine then I think it should connect to another pipe that runs down and under the outside of the passenger footwell. You would probably need to jack the car up to get at the lower connector.

I could be completely wrong though !!!

Yep, oil breather pipe. Not fitted to all cars and not strictly necessary from what I was told by the engine boys at Ford...

Must go somewhere in the engine bay shirely, seen plenty of 'random and stray' wires under a Tiv bonnet but not many hoses .

Thanks for the replies chaps. Please excuse my gross ignorance, but if it's the oil breather pipe, what does that make the pipe going from my oil filler cap to the air filter? And also why would where there be what looks like a sensor of some description (the film cannister looky-likey thing, third picture down) attached to it? Surely there's no great need to measure something coming from the breather if it's just going to be exhausted? Please do enlighten me, would really like to know more about the workings of my car!

Sorry about the size of the photos, will try to figure out how to reduce the resolution in the future!
