Have been in the market for a certain Honda soft top. Today I popped into my local dealers. The salesman didn't have one in stock but there are several used examples dotted around the other dealerships. He offered to transport a car to his branch. Before I led the gave me some printed details of a car, inc price at a dealership 50miles away.

I left. When I got home I looked up the car online. Imagine my surprise to find the car over £2000 cheaper at the other dealership. I went to speak to him. He went to speak to his manager, came back and said the £2000 surcharge was the transport costs, extended warranty etc. He was completely flustered, couldn't even look me in the eye. I've since rang the other dealer. They will sell me the car inc warranty for the price advertised online.

Is it reasonable to charge £2000 to ship a car 50 miles? And this is an official dealer. I'm a little pissed off, to tell the truth.

I can only think that the other dealer has reduced the price and not applied the change to the car through the central system providing such a thing exists.

Therefore when the guy you speak to runs the price etc he gets the info he gave you.

Why he then chose to dig a hole I really don't know...

That's a bit odd.
I would have thought you'd maybe have to put a £500 deposit on it before they shipped it to your local dealer, but that'd be all. Can't imagine what the £2k is for though.

I'm assuming you're looking at S2000's - if so, is Honda approved really the way to go? They have 5 on their at present and they're all way overpriced IMO. Surely a better way would be to wait for a good one coming up for sale privately?

A salesman at a Honda dealer in Lancaster did exactly the same to me a few years ago. His sales manager took exception to me describing his staff as lying bds at relatively high volume in the showroom. We eventually came to an agreement.

Never had to pay for that before. All they have ever said to me was a depsit was needed which was refundable.

One place said if i didnt buy it hey would charge 50 quid which i thought was reasonable.

I would say i think he was trying it on but i wont because i dont want to incur he wrath of the usual suspects.

. They have given me printouts for 2 cars. Both have had the price inflated by various amounts. The cheapest car has £2100 added on to the price at the other dealer. The salesman admitted to inflating the price of the car.

Of course he adds a margin, you are free to buy from wherever you choose.

the car was over-age at the first dealer so he reduced the price. The second dealer is happy to sell it but, of course, wants to make a profit.
Buy it from the first dealer by all means.

Drive 50 miles and buy it from the dealer who has it in stock at the lower price.

The agreement was to sell the car to me at the price advertised at the dealer I'd sourced the car from, after they concocted a story about how I missed out on that one, but they'd managed to source another (more expensive) one. Sadly for them the mileage and spec matched perfectly.

There were no other clients in the showroom and I continued to use them for servicing, as I got on very well with the staff there (apart from the salesman, who left soon after).

This.

The likelihood is they're separate dealer groups, so the first dealer will have to buy the car from the second dealer, both will want to make a margin (it is what keeps them in business, makes sure they're still there when you want your next service etc).

The car has been at original dealers for less than a week. Dealer must be making profit on the sale. I didn't twig that my local dealer has to buy car from first dealer and then sell it on to me. They're both official dealers. But now the car is ridiculously over priced! And as you say, I can go to the original dealer and save myself over £2k. It just feels wrong!

Dealers are generally franchises.

If you went to Tesco and asked them for a tin of Sainsburys beans, they would have to go to Sainsburys, buy the beans then (after adding a margin to cover this time/effort) sell it on to you.

I'm just wondering. Have you ever experienced an unexpressed thought?

So I pay 2 margins for the car? It keeps them in business but essentially I'm being ripped off. The warranty will not be specific to the dealership. I'm really struggling to see any integrity in this.

I'm struggling to see the point of this thread! The second dealer offered to sell you a car at a price. You decline to buy because you realise it's cheaper elsewhere.
The only issue, really, is that the salesman badly explained it to (lied, basically).
He'll learn, in time, to tell the customer that he's a business...and profit isn't a dirty word.
