Approx cost to build a 'new' 200Tdi defender?
Discussion
Seem to recall in the dim distant past one of the mags did this.
Think it worked out at well over twice the cost of a new 'un but that was when a new 'un was still available.
Guess it depends how much you want a 200Tdi, which reminds me, if you're gonna do it, why not do it properly and fit a 300?

Always though the 200's were the better of the two? The more reliable anyway. Is that not the case?Think it worked out at well over twice the cost of a new 'un but that was when a new 'un was still available.

I've never really understood why people favour the 200 over the 300.
Parts are getting harder to find for the 200. Good used engines ditto.
Yet the 300 was a much improved (more refined) version of the 200. Still no electronic control on the earlier (up to 1999?) versions and with the benefit of the much, much nicer R380 gearbox.
Those I know who do favour the 200 just say it's 'more reliable'. But my 300 has done 163,000 miles, so it's not an argument I can readily accept.

Hmmm its not cheap!
If you do a search on here you will find my build thread for a 200tdi 110 nut and bolt restoration.. You will see I re used my chassis all be it patched, blasted and powder coated, Re used the majority of the body panels, engine, bulkhead etc.. All be it mostly refurbished.
Total cost of parts and base vehicle (£2500) was well into double figures and that was using non gen parts where possible. I think to do it using all new parts you would be looking at north of 20k if you did the work yourself. If someone else was to do the work then I think the sky is the limit as far as expense.
If it was me I would buy one new if I had the choice in most circumstances apart from one.... When I finally get round to driving around the world in a Defender I would rather be in a 200tdi with less reliance upon electronics than a modern Defender.

Your looking around £25 - 30k ... Dependant on specification of interior.
That's galvanised chassis, axles, door frames, bulkhead and body fittings.
Deeside 4x4 do a defender for life. Speak to Neil Davy the owner who undertakes these type of commissions.
I had one done 5 years ago and still very happy with it, my friend had one done and still happy with his -- so 2 happy customers.
The tdi is reliable and easy to maintain, but no match against a modern engine.
You need to want one !!!
