Residency certificate?

I am chasing payment for work done for a French company, and Im having to jump through hoops for them. Latest request is for my residency certificate in the UK. Apparently it is for 'double taxation' purposes, but I have never heard of it.

If you were born in the UK of UK parents you wont have one of those, so send your NI number and passport number, they should suffice, maybe even send your UTR?
Perhaps birth certificate would be enough?

You can obtain a certificate of residency from HMRC here:

This is the UK/France double tax treaty:

Broadly speaking, you will pay tax in France on that income, and then receive a credit in the UK on your tax here. They require the certificate to confirm which country you are tax resident of to confirm which country takes preference and which country you receive the credit in.

Are you self employed or do you operate via a personal service company? I assume you didn't actually go to France to carry out the work? If this is the case then the French company are probably requesting a UK certificate of residence so they can make the payment to you gross.
