Twitchy Rev Counter

Right here's the thing.. Had some new HT leads fitted at the last service. Now the needle on the rev counter jumps about all the time.. The only thing I can find that is a little bit out of place is that the insulating piece at the very end off the coil is a bit chipped.. Could this cause a leak from the High side to the low side, i.e where the rev counter is connected and produce this symptom??.. Has anyone else experienced this when replacing leads??

The generic cause of rev counter spiking is a failing coil. Perhaps the coil was damaged when the HT lead was fitted.

Might be worth trying a coil change.. I've got part number 0221 122 395 for the Bosch unit.. Does anyone know a good online site to buy from.. I found one on www.land-rover-parts-shop.com/show_item_detail.php?item=ODA0&groupid=NTAx&mode=browse&search=&subcat=MTI2 but not sure if this is the correct part.. Can anyone help with this??

What Ignition Leads were fitted it wasn't Magnecor by any chance - interested to find out

Yeah they were Magnecor... Have changed the coil now which has not improved it so I can only assume that it is the leads.. I don't have the old ones to try to prove as they were changed on a service.. Can't see why this "upgrade" would cause this problem. I would have thought that the new leads would protect against this sort of thing better than the old ones..

My car did the same as this, considering this is a highly expensive upgrade component I now have serious doubts whether Magnecor leads are up to the job under a very hot and cramped engine bonnet. I am now finalising some comparison tests between stock Landrover part and Magnecor leads and will let you know.

One further question how did you find your engine was running after the engine was up to temperature on a nice warm day. Could you have a peep under the bonnet when engines nice and hot on a dark night.

Yeah will do.. It's off the road at the moment but not for too long.. The engine runns much better with the new leads but I am puzzled why this should cause this annoying side effect. There must be others on here that have changed for magnecor..

Try rerouting the leads away from all the sensor wires particularly the negative coil ones which I understand feed the rev counter. I did this and shielded the wires with little success but worth a try.
