Cheap oil change?

Many years ago (probably about 10 years ago!) you could get an oil and filter change for about £40 at one of the major tyre retails (kwikfit IIRC.) They even used decent shell fully synth oils (at least that's what the drum said they were pumping from)
Since then I've always done oil changes myself. I feel I'm getting a bit too busy / old to be bothering with that myself, but still like regular oil changes in all my cars.
I have the need to do an oil and filter change in a 2003 Ford KA. £25 worth of parts from a motor factors. I figured if I could get this done for £40 at a garage, the time it would save me doing it myself would at least be worth £15.
Phoned a few indi places today, the best quote I've had was £110 for a minor service. What does that include I asked, wondering if it would save me doing the plugs, leads and airfilter too? Nope, just oil and filter, and a "check" of the rest of the car.
Does no one want work anymore?

Yep National still do the cheap oil changes and I've used them a couple of times on an Audi TT I used to have. When booking previously, they used to state specifically that the oil they used was branded, ie Mobil 1.
Now on their website, they just say "Premium Equivalent" or something like that so there's no guarantee an oil of the right spec will be used.

I reckon if you did it yourself you could get an oil and filter change down to around £16 with the bits from somewhere like euro car parts. If you buy the oil in bulk 20 litre drums from them and it could work out even cheaper!
I can change the oil in my van for less than a tenner, mate gets me 5 litres of oil, filter from euro, job done, tightness has its benefits...jon- said:

Bonkers idea - but have you tried a franchised dealer? They might do it cheap as they'll be looking for other work.My local MB dealer advertises "servicing from £99" and I got my daughter's Mitsubishi Colt scheduled service including renewing the excellent Mitsubishi Assistance Plan for £92.50 the other day - and they gave me a courtesy car free.
I was also given (by mistake) the invoice for the first service on our Golf, covered by VW 3yr service plan - it was £68 inc parts, labour & VAT.
Most Ford dealers have a 'fast-fit' type operation - wonder what they'd charge?
I got an manual oil vacuum pump thingy for about £20, you shove it down the dipstick tube, couple of pumps, go in for a cup of tea, come back out, change filter, fill with oil, job done. The only real hassle is getting the oil down the neighbors top water drain without them noticing.

LOLWell Ive never changed my oil. Not because I dont want to but because its too much effort. Every car Ive ever had has had a floor pan under the engine. Id need to get it up on ramps, unscrew screws I cant see with screwdrivers I dont own. Messing around with sump plugs, risk getting oil every, having to dispose of the oil and then risk putting it all together incorrectly.
