Having had my 996 turbo with X50 package for nearly 2 years it's time to renew.

As always I get my renewal quote which has gone down slightly but do a comparison. The comparison quotes are much lower, but the devils in the detail, so more questions:

- Declare it's X50 with 450bhp (30bhp over standard)
- Ask if in case of an accident I can take it to an OPC of my choice
- Confirmed value, not market rate

All going well, then I thought I'd double check around the X50. They had originally quoted as a remap which gives under 10% extra power (which sounded fine).

As this is a factory fitted option a lot of insurers don't have an option for I started to describe the package. As soon as you mention that the X50 package changes the turbos, intercoolers and ECU tune some insurers see it as modified and won't offer cover.

All I can say is if you have a Porsche which has a factory fitted 'power pack' like the X50 take extra care ensuring that your insurer understands the detail and covers it!

If you've got a 996 turbo X50 who do you insure it with?

I thought standard practice was if it came out the factory like that then its standard. From a used car point of view people might not know what optional extras a car has once its had a few owners. (i know theres the sticker under the bonnet but some people might not know that).

That's sounds like sticking your head in the sand and hoping for the best.

A car that's got the 450bhp X50 factory option is still different to a standard 420bhp car and if you want to ensure you get an X50 back after an accident I'd suggest it's best to ensure it's clearly highlighted upfront.

It's easy to start over thinking these things.

Does the DVLA not recognise it as an X50? For example, my old Golf was registered with the DVLA, and therefore with the insurance company, as a Golf TDI SE - the SE bit only meaning it had an automatic dimming rear mirror and automatic wipers.

No the DVLA recognises it as a 996 turbo.

The X50 package is a factory option, just like the various seat or wheel packages.

So you risk a refusal to payout or getting a standard 996 turbo instead of one with X50 if not declared.

Consumer Insurance Act has made these things a lot clearer.

In this day and age, you would be naive to leave issues like that to chance and rely on resolving the issue when the Insurance Co. has you over a barrel.

Like the OP states (and I have done with my car) I submitted a copy of the Options Sticker along with other items that had been added subsequently. In the event of a payout there is a clear, documented position.

All one hears now is Insurance Co. looking for excuses to not pay out - ie look at flooding - flooding by river overflowing ok, flooding by rising groundwater not (just an example)

Why do I take this position - We had similar on my company Vans re: Steel wheels vs Alloys, both fitted at factory but one considered an upgrade/option, the other considered Std when they were subsequently nicked.

I insure mine with A-Plan. They insured it with the X50 pack with no problems.
All declared and above board. I'm sure I could've got cheaper had I not mentioned it but as others have said, should anything happen then the insurers could pay out less as a result (or not at all!)
The guys at A-Plan knew exactly what the X50 kit was and were easy to deal with.
If you want me to dog out the number, let me know.
Kind Regards,

Doggydog.

Always disclosed my X50 pack and never had any problem getting it insured on standard terms.
