Had the same situation before and I don't believe there is a one step process - made me wish I'd put my plate on retention before finding a buyer as it delayed things while I got the paperwork for the non cherished plate to go back on the car (don't let him take the car until you have your plate secured on retention and a new V5 or he would have the right to keep your plate!).

Just get the paperwork done and get things moving, you are only putting off this exercise f you delay now.
