Why do manufacturers make AWD cars in petrol but not diesel?

Just that really. Looking at Volvo V50s, need AWD and diesel, but the only AWD cars are the petrol T5s, which would be nice, but not practical.

Why do they do this? Subaru took ages to make any diesels too, and the Skoda Octavia 4x4 wasn't available in diesel until Mk2 either.

BMW, Audi, Suzuki and Land Rover all do off the top of my head, I'm sure there's plenty of others.

I'm pretty sure Audi's Quattro is available on a number of diesels, also I'm sure I've seen a diesel Passat 4Motion

BMW do a 1 & 3 & 4 series diesel with AWD not to mention the X1/X3/X5/X6.

I'm not saying diesel 4x4 cars don't exist. But seems only to have caught on recently. Pretty much everything above is out of budget (too new), but there are lots of older 4x4 petrol cars - Subaru, VW Golf/Passat 4motion, etc. Volvo still don't seem to make a smaller diesel AWD car. I was wondering if this was because most are sold in a particular market which favours diesel less.. can't work it out?

4WD is an expensive option on cars, diesel drivers are all tight bds.

I think the OP is missing the difference between the 3 types of AWD system available on the market

Type 1 - AWD fitted to cars which actually go offroad (Land Rovers, Land Cruisers etc.) - all available and indeed mostly sold as diesels

Type 2 - AWD fitted to BMWs so people don't laugh at you on the 3 icy days each year - diesels available

Type 3 - AWD fitted to cars as a marketing gimmick - some diesels still available

Which of those was the OP considering??

AWD products are generally for the American Snow belt and Canada, hence petrol prioritised.

Legacy more of a road car.. And will return to 1 driven wheel on each F/R axle in the slippy stuff.. ala bmw/audi et al.
Outback anf Forester have lsd fitted in the rear axle i think so min is 3 driven wheels.

Iv driven the diesel for a 24 hr test n it was ok.

Diesel legacys have been about since... 2008 or so..

Pure numbers. For a lot of manufacturers it's simply not worth the cost of developing and supporting AWD in either fuel let alone one or the other. If you need a AWD diesel then Volvo will push you towards the XC60.
