Here's a weird one for you - I was wondering if there's any such event where you can take your own unmodified, road going car onto a loose surface rally stage (mud/gravel/etc). Not worried about timing or anything, but would like to use my own car and not necessarily have an instructor (like a circuit track day) to keep costs down. Does it exist?

Auto cross would appear to be what you're looking for, and very popular in the US - but not something I hear much about in the UK.

I had a rally experience day with http://www.extreme-rally.co.uk/ and I can really recommend it, though not exactly what you're looking for.

Hmm, not much then. Barkson Heath would be good if it was a loose surface but from a quick google it looks like a paved runway...

this is interesting, I was talking to my local motor club about organising a 'rally' trackday. not necessarily for roads cars as they'd be killed on anything other than a smooth surface. They have the venue to deliver such an experience but not the will...yet.

If you race a car, quite often you would attend the test/track day at the same circuit the day before, but I don't think this happens in rallying. I can't think of many organised test days for rallying. It would be interesting to know if any rallyists would attend a rally trackday the day before the event if it was offered?

you could probably hire a rally school venue to achieve this. Bill Gwynne at Turweston might be a good place to start.

Thanks for the last 2. Any idea how much they'd cost?

I might be wrong, but your last question sounds a bit like.

"I can't be bothered to do my own homework for my own benefit, but will you?"

I have had many customers asking to use our venue for there own cars and the first question I always ask is where are the brake and fuel lines, many road cars have both running underneath the floor.

My advice, if your thinking about driving on a proper loose stage surface then make sure your car is set up for it as a gravel will destroy a road car.

You could try Langley park rally school on the Hertfordshire / Essex border. I think they may hire out their stages. I did a days driving there a while back and they were a great bunch of folks.
