It makes a lot more room for the fusebox (and that can then even be shifted a little to make it more accessible). I cant recall if you need 2 90degs instead of 1 180deg, but you need to make sure of the diameters ~ some of the pipes go 1/2" to 5/8" or 13~16mm IIRC.
You really need flex pipe and clips inserting into the heater box so you can bend the pipes to avoid the heater vent & stop passengers yanking the pipes out...
Early cars also have a heater bypass fitting, but that is just like a double pipe joiner so can be plumbed in as you couple everything up.
