Well, eventually after what must have been 7 hours in total I solved the door lock problem. (when trying to lock, it immediately unlocked itself again – and later I noticed the courtesy light was staying on)

Process
1) Passenger side, open door, remove door switch, check for voltage at switch and good earth. All OK.
2) Go to driver side, open door, remove switch, good earth but no voltage! Ah must be a break up-stream from the switch.
a. Dashboard apart
b. alarm disconnect (as the wire goes there),
c. found a worn wire where passes through a panel but no voltage anywhere!

Lots of internet searching and requesting diagrams from the great community on Pisonheads (thanks Dan).

Queue lots of thinking, drawing pictures etc. Eureka! Passenger and Drivers side voltage supply is from same wire, and door open earths it – so it must be because the passenger door is open!

Close passenger door and repeat. However, it’s STILL showing no voltage at the driver’s side. Take the passenger one to bits, still got a voltage. Now I am really confused!

Put all back together and give up.
Go back an hour later and open each door independently and just press the switch to hear any clanking of solenoids or relays. Works passenger side only.

Give up and go to bed.

Draw more pictures, figure our it HAS to be an earth, on passenger side. Mess about pressing switches for half hour, then notice the rubber trim on the bottom of the passenger door is unfixed for the last few inches! Lie on the floor and watch the door closing from underneath with a mirror, the button is only just touched because the dropped seal is pushing the bottom of the door out a few mil. Glue gun the seal back in place and HEY-PRESTO it’s all working!!!

Only now I get a buzzing from the driver’s door locking solenoid when opening or closing doors, for about half a second, but that’s for another day! FYI, Maplins no longer sell the 5-wire solenoid!

You need a sense of humor with a TVR.

Haha, I like your last comment, that is true. Glad you got it sorted.

There was a thread on here about the solenoids. SPAL do a good quality one.... http://www.spalautomotive.co.uk/acatalog/SPAL_CENT...

Thanks Zed4. Maplin do a kit with 2 x 2wire and 2 x 5 wire (for £32) but no more single 5-wire solenoid.

You could spend £32 in petrol trying to find a cheaper alternative, but so long as the roof was off, would you care?

Sounds like a very good excuse to go for a drive on the glorious Sunday we are told we will get.
