2011 A8 or XJ

It's that time again.... Starting to get itchy feet and thinking of trading in the daily drive!

Currently have a 2008 A8 3.0 TDI.

Thinking of a new model 2011 A8 with the same engine or a Jag XJ with the 3 litre diesel.

Any thoughts on comparisons? Ive booked to go and have a look at an XJ next month, have driven the A8 and it's very nice indeed. Better again than my current B3 and that's pretty bloody good!

Probably won't take the plunge until August anyway so plenty of time to make my mind up!

if it was my money it'd be the XJ every time. Stunning cars! Not saying the A8 isn't mind! To me the A8 is understated, the Jag has a classier more elegant look. Plus it's something different, as you state you already have an A8. I enjoy trying different cars each time I come to change, I've never had the same model twice. The only thing that puts me off the Jag is the fact the front looks exactly the same as the facelifted XF, mind you same could be said for the universal 'Audi' look.

All depends whether you want the no nonsense German or a wafty English gentleman.

My vote goes to the Jaaaaaaaag!

The A8 is ugly and bland. The XJ stands out and looks powerful, agressive and much more expensive.

The A8 says to me that you simply beat other the other rival salesmen that month on the chart of cement sales.

Couldn't agree more about the looks.

My a8 is basically a big a6 (or really big a4) of the same vintage.

Jag wins hands down.

Curious about general fit, finish, quality, gadgetry of the cabin!

Keys on the table and I'd take the Jag every time. I got chatting to a guy not far from me who's only ever had XJ. He said his current one is the best of the lot and he'd never once considered changing it.

Nothing at all wrong with the Jag's fit and finish, but I found the gearbox less than silky on the SuperSports version I helmed (excuse the Troy Queef-ism). Can't deny that they look fantastic though - even girls with no interest in cars have pointed them out to me so they clearly get the right sort of attention!

XJ for me, no contest.

Consider a LWB version, they look really cool IMHO.

But also consider an S-class of equivalent age. That is the only other luxury saloon I could find that gave anything approaching the same feel-good factor as the XJ.

Much as I hate the Chinese market oriented current XJ it is rwd and Audi is fwd.

So XJ it is.

My brother has the Supersport XJ and is exceedingly pleased with it. It is vividly fast, yet still vey smooth indeed. The interior is a lovely place to be.

In that market segment, he reckons the XJ is the best choice by some margin if you drive the car yourself, with the S Class Mercedes the best car to get if you have a driver.
