Right then. I've seen a 54 plate cooper S that has had everything from the options list added. The price is good and the mileage is reasonable for the year. It has a full Mini history and looks like a fair bet. Is this a supercharged or turbo charged engine? Is there anything really obvious to look for in these cars?

It says it's got 70K on the clock, I'm guessing that's no massive problem with these.

You would just replace the supercharger rather than rebuild and anyway unless there is a problem why would you?
Ours is a 54 plate too, with only 60k miles, same colour, its in having a new can chain and tensioner. It sounded like a tractor.
Also exhausts tend to rust and are due at this age. Ours is a new Fletcher system. See the condition, its all a haggling tool.

The superchargers are supposed to last 100k, but you don't hear of that many failures beyond this.
Nothing much goes wrong with these cars. That looks like a facelift version, so check the (oil filled) engine mount for leakage, not a major issue but you could use it to knock a few quid off.

Yep, with the 2004 facelift they switched to a 5th Gen charger from 3rd Gen. IIRC this is the same that was used in the JCW from the start. There's a few nice changes (more power, different gear ratios, more pops+bangs, some cosmetic changes) for the facelift version, so worth going for. I think about 2004 possibly earlier, supposedly last longer and a bit pokier, 163 vs 170hp.

Seriously, I've got a lowly 2002 cooper, and the more I read about them on the internet the more I think that customer's have carried out the reliability programme for BMW.
Defo got the 17" S-Spokes, it's also a facelift model (June/July '04 onwards - different style lights, smooth chrome-finish trim around the grille, better 3-piece dashboard instead of the rattly 5-piece) so will be running 170hp as standard. If it has the Chilli pack you'll also have the mechanical LSD - which is a must.
Well he's still got it. The more I hear, the more I like the idea. I'm guessing this one has the decent 6 speed Getrag box as well. I've just renewed the tax on my current motor, and the MOT is due in a couple of weeks. I'm on a push bike shopping spree at present as well, so this is a bit of a should I / shouldn't I job.
