Going to Sell how much ? , and What next ?
Discussion
I've had my Griff for just over a year its been great fun but I have decided to sell probably May Next year.
It's a 99 T in Dodge Viper GTS Blue, 2 tone grey 1/2 leather , PAS , 25K miles , TVR plate , very original and in exceptional condition. Never let me down only needed a new rad otter switch cost £7.00 !.
So How much is it worth ?
Selling because now got some more money and like to try different cars.
My list to look at is as follows please give me your comments and suggestions.
Ferrari 308 , I've always wanted one but daren't buy one , they are now very old are they any good / expensive to keep ?
( guessing my cars worth 19-20K I would have about 30K to spend does this get a good 308 )
Others are Boxster S, 911 , Honda S2000 , Elise 111R

The TVR's worth about £20k, I reckon.
I looked at various Ferraris before I bought the Griff but decided against it for two reasons. Firstly, the general concensus (from the experts that I talked to) is that to buy a decent one you need to pay 50k+. Secondly, the cost of servicing was significant.

Specialists like Verdi, Podgson and Rosso Corsa all quote £375-400 plus VAT for an annual/6k service; and cambelt changes at circa £350.
Round £28-32k should get you a reasonable rhd 328/348; £22-26k a 308?
If you deceide against a Ferrari, you mention £30k - this might get you into a T350C perhaps?

Price it higher, we dont want the Griff market value dropping!
Does sound like a good 'un too.
AS for you next choice of car, they seemt o vary a lot. What is it that you want it for? Touring? Tracks? Just for fun?
From your list I wouldn't get the S2000. They are good cars in their own right but I think you'd be disapointed after having the Griff. Take one for a drive and you'll see what I mean.
As for 911's, have you checked the prices? They are pretty expensive (at least all the ones I like are!).
Does LHD bother you?
LHD 996, 993, 348 and Corvettes C5s all seem to go for good prices. 1999 C5 Corvettes can be bought for as little as £15K now.

Don't know about you, Dusty, but I feel anything with a long bonnet is a no-no for our busy roads and streets. How in hell's name do you ever get to use the full power of a Viper, for example, in UK conditions if you're not interested in track days.
The roads are out there and waiting to be discovered.
I thought it was a bit pointless owning a sports car with todays roads until I bought one. (The car, i couldn't afford my own road).
Doesn't take long to find all the great quiet driving roads. They mostly start with the letter B
My route to work should be motorway or one long A road but I choose a mixture of twisty Bs and a couple of A roads instead. They are nice and quiet and every day I find a slightly better (and safer) line around one of the corners making every day a track day!
(well, not really, but its certainly more fun than the FAST lane of the motorway).
The other thing I emant to say is....The Elise sounds like a good idea if you like B roads. Cuzza and me have been for a blast and keeping up with him on the really tight twisties takes maximum effort and puts the Griff right on its limits.

Whatever anyone will pay (apologies - but true)

The classic Magnum-mobile! Personally I prefer the look of the 348. LHD 355s are falling very close to £30k now.
You have to keep up the service history to get anything for it when you e sell - and I think that means a cambelt every 2 years (maybe 3?). Routine servicing at an independent doesn't seem to b much more than for a TVR, but obviously wearables like brakes and clutch don't come off a Sierra / Range Rover...

Agree with the previous comments re other cars, but have to add that every enthusiast should drive a 911 sometime!
If you just fancy a change, go for something with the engine in a different place?!

Barreti has just bought his 2nd Griff (don't ask), and he turned up at the EMTVRCC meet in an S2000.
I'm sure he'll elaborate if you mail him.
Blimey maggit, you've got a good memory.
It's Silverstone with red leather and it's my missus's not mine. (she's a petrolhead but won't admit it!)
Very nice car and if Deb didn't already own one I might have bought one instead of Griff #2
They pootle around town very nicely but are a hardish ride. Get them on an open bit of road and let it rev to 6k and it becomes a rocket and revs to 9k !!
It has the best gearshift I've ever known and good positive steering.
About the same space as the Griff although the boot is quite shallow. We've just been quoted £190 for a major service. We've had it since easter and love it.
I can recommend it very highly.
Hi Barreti,
A major service on a Griffith for £190? Sounds a bit dubious. Check what work they are going to do for you and what parts they are using.
I've copied the TVR RRP for the parts required below and this comes to circa £170 plus the VAT. (Obviously by going to a factors you can get a fair chunk of discount off these figures.) But, then TVR recon it will take 7 hours labour to do the service.
ENGINE OIL 6.5 LITRES @ £4.50 PER LITRE £29.25
DIFF OIL SHC 1401D 1.6 LTRS @ £11.60 PER LTR £18.56
BRAKE & CLUTCH FLUID £7.13
GEARBOX OIL (SHC ATF 220) £10.33
SPARK PLUGS 8 @ £5.80 EACH £ 46.40
AIR FILTER £23.02
FUEL FILTER £20.30
OIL FILTER £7.50
ANTIFREEZE 5 LITRES @ £4.20 PER LTR £21.00
SUNDRIES £4.50
Good luck.

In fairness those are factory quoted proces and we all know we can beat them ..... My father gets his Chimaera serviced for the same money as the S2000 mentioned here by a recommended and extremely competent independent.
I haven't used them myself but will be very very shortly. Ask the Norfolk and Suffolk guys where they take there cars ..... other than Kerridges .....
Barreti - Woops sorry I mis-understood!
Johno - I was careful to say TVR RRP. You'll get those bits a LOT cheaper at a motor factors. But; at £190 (does that include VAT?) whoever you are using are cutting corners. I'm not saying that main dealers/specialists/every other garage don't also cut the same corners, so whoever you are using may still be the best people for the job.

My fathers been in the trade all his life, and has trained many mechanics in his time. He used Kerridges 1st when he returned to the fold, then he tried Scole Engineering after recommendation from me through the guys from Norfolk and Soffulk TVRCC, and a good friend who has one of only 2 450se auto's in the world.
They all use him, think he's fantastic, wholly recommend him, and he didn't forget or skip the things that Kerridges did.
Let me reassure you, my Dad is the kinda bloke that checks what is supposed to be done, and then when he gets his cars back he checks it was done.
His last service was £173 total. He wasn't charged for the strip and rebuild of the rear calipers as he didn't have the bits, so Dad said don't bother, he'd do them at home.
The service took 8hrs and he reckons it goes better now than it has ever done in the last 2 years. He doesn't like relinquishing his cars to anyone, so they have to measure up.
Having serviced my S, I reckon with the right kit even I could do a 6k service in a day on a Griffith, and with wholesale prices for parts I don't see the issue. Unforutnately in the sarth we pay for rent and labour rates that are not representative of the rest of the country.
With any product it comes down to perception and value, this bloke delivers for a huge number fo TVR owber regionally, I can't find a single bad word said against him and my dad was so chuffed he phoned me up to tell me about.

Keep the suggestions etc comming , It's nice to see people not just slagging everything off that isn't TVR.
I've now had 3 decent sports cars
(a) Westfield ( I built ) , very fast , sounded great , handling to good ( only fun on track ) , could not breath over 80mph.
(b) Lotus Elise 160 super , quite fast , sounded great , handling very very good but still lots of fun on road , impossible with roof on ( i'm 6'2" ) wind around tabs with roof off.
(c) My current TVR , fast , sounds fantastic , looks beautiful , handling good on smooth roads but frightning on fast twisty roads , nice on long trips.
My problem is I only use the car occasionally and like to push it down the old country lanes , this is where the TVR falls just a little short.
I would love a modern TVR if it had a BMW engine !.
Has any one driven a 308 / 328 ( on twisty roads? )
and experienced the ownership costs ?
