Hi, I hope some of you mechanics can offer me a little help here.

My chimaera's clutch has been slipping in higher gears over the last few weeks and I've arranged for an indie to replace the plate and fork etc. this saturday- on the understanding that I supply the bits.

I called my usual (v. good) motor factor but he says that they can only now supply the whole clutch at £200 + vat (probably a bargain but I think I only need the plate).

Sooo, is it my best option to go for this package or can any of you direct me to somewhere that I can just source the plate and fork?

I realise I only have a few days to make a decision and any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Kenny

Having fallen foul of this in the past, nowaday I would always want the person doing the fitting to supply the parts. Otherwise you can end up in trouble if it doesn't work, and the fitter says the parts were faulty/wrong while the parts supplier says they were wrongly fitted.

I don't know what model you have. I gather the 500 clutches are a TVR special. I don't know the exact price but in the region of £500-£600 I think. The other models are more normal and can be bought from other RV8 specialists, but be aware that RV8 clutches aren't all the same; you need the right one. When mine has been replaced I've been advised to replace the friction plate, pressure plate, release bearing and fork as a complete set. I expect you can get the parts you need from a TVR dealer/specialist, no doubt there will be some mark up but often less than you'd think and at least you can be confident you are getting the right parts. If nothing else, this would give you a starting point for the price.

Thank you Peter for being forthright.

I guess that I should purchase the whole thing as just buying a clutch plate, could be a false ecomomy.
I realis that a new pressure plate and release bearing should be considered also- along with fresh oil seals.

Incidently, no worries on the guy who is going to fit the parts- he trained as a TVR mechanic since he was 22 years old and now works for Jaguar (he's in his forties now)..

We'll be fitting the parts in a safe, hydrauolic environment- all the easier to remove the exhaustt!

Kenny

Here goes... all this is info I've picked up over the past couple of weeks... might be wrong, might be right... the clutch cover for a 500 is a TVR special - stronger pressure to cope with the power. The 500 plate is also upgraded, as is the release arm, which is welded/strengthened to operate the stronger cover. Bearing is a standard part. The 4.0 and 4.3 are cheaper parts that'll work fine, but aren't up to the abuse a 5 litre can hand out - I'm having a 500 setup fitted in my 4.3 Griff - couldn't face having to fit another one in a few years.
You can get a recon Range Rover clutch pack very cheap, but it may not last as long as a TVR spec one.
Prices are roughly £130 for a 500 cover, £120 for the 500 plate (£50-ish more than a 4.3 plate), modded release arm £75 and bearing £13, all approximate.
Fitting is 6 to 8 hours depending on where you take it.
I've changed clutches on other stuff years ago, and looking at the size of the Rover box, wouldn't try it on my own.

Ken,
Try TVR POWER they will definitely have the right parts, OR be able to get them for you PDQ.
Worthwhile looking at the 1st motion shaft oil seal on the 'box as well.
Regarding price, I think the land rover kit does work out at around £230'ish so £200 seems ok....but there are obviously some differences if yours is a 500...see previous posts.

Thanks for the replies- and sorry for the duplicate posting- BT kept disconnecting my dial up last night.

Hmm, things are looking better- V8 Developments can suppy for £150 (ex vat) with only £7 p&p and I'm waiting for a call back from RPI (separate company) who may be even cheaper.

Again, many thanks.
