Cheep & Cheerful Citroen SaxoVTR
Discussion
I piked up this car last week for some cheap fun. Its a 1.6 8V Saxo VTR with a manly 90-100bhp, it has done 145K miles an seems in pretty good nick. It has a full MOT but there are a few issues that need sorting fairly soon such as front tires, a bottom ball joint an probably a good service. The last 3 letters on the number plate are also my initials.
So far my costs are;
£445 - Car
£3.50 - 3 x exhaust hangers
£3 - fuel filter
The insurance is £49 a month fully comp at 22 with 1 claim and only a years no claims. The tax is pretty steep at £225 a year! I'll try to keep this up to date with all issues and money spending.

*cough* strip it, track it, blow it up, gti6 engine it
Considering I have just moved back to north Cornwall the track bit is going to be difficult! Although blow it up and GTI-6 sounds good... Or I could make use of the knackard Corrado VR6 sat on the drive..

Like that a lot in the green! Really dont see that many vtr/vts's for these days and there not exactly that old.
Whats it like to drive as i've been thinking about something like this as im finding my current fleet a bit lacking in fun

Most of them have been modified so much they are hardly recognisable and then broken for parts or scrapped.Whats it like to drive as i've been thinking about something like this as im finding my current fleet a bit lacking in fun

I can't really comment yet as the front ball joints have play in them and the tires are old and crap but so far so good. According to the internet it has between 90-100 bhp and weighs 900kg

Grey top engines had 98bhp, and black tops had 90. I had one back in the day and it was great. Koni yellows, Magnex exhaust, Simota induction. Lovely little car despite the rattles and squeaks
This is one of the in the middle ones I think its 90bhp but with a silver top. It has the cat under the car and only one lamda sensor. SteellFJ said:
Thinking about one of these or its Peugeot cousin this year for some cheap motoring to allow SWMBO's replacement car funds to grow.
Good price for that as well
Go for it, just don't crash it!!Good price for that as well

You're right, that's a 90bhp model. 98's came in at the end of 2001 IIRC. To be honest, every earlier model I've dyno'd kicks out more than 90bhp anyway. They're all slow compared with a VTS, that's the real issue
Silver top engine denotes it's a roller-rocker head, not the earlier direct on lobe type. Good news as it means the cam doesn't wear anywhere near as quickly, not that they wore much to begin with. Gearbox is the real mechanical weakness in these.
Looks tidy enough for the money though

Not all bad then! To be honest I can't tell the difference, I had a 51 plate VTR with the 98bhp and there is no difference
I was originally after a VTS or MG ZR 160 but I ended up with half my budget and I need the car asap. I'm happy so far I just need to tighten it up I'm sure four tyres, the front ball joints and a decent service will make a nice difference.
Changing gears in this one is so much nicer than my old one, it's had a drive shaft and box oil fairly recently and its pretty quiet!
