As per title, looking for somewhere nice and traditional, pretentious etc near Derby, preferably to the East or South.

Any thoughts?

Cheers x

My mates from Spondon. The night before his wedding we all piled out to Repton for dinner. Liked it.

You won't find much south or east in my opinion.

West and north are better.

I like Ashbourne and Matlock.

I don't know about "posh", but there's some lovely little villages/towns dotted round the outskirts. Ticknall, Melbourne, Weston-on-Trent, Etwall/Findern, Radbourne...

For suburbs, Chellaston is relatively upmarket on the whole... Mickleover, Darley Abbey (I think!)...

OP was vague and cryptic in equal measure though!

Repton, Melbourne, Coleorton, Long Whatton, Breedon on the Hill, Ashby De La Zouch - there are plenty of nice places.

I live in the area so tell me what you are looking for and I will gladly give you some recommendations.

Hmmm, let's see...

I think the nearest posh town to Derby on the south side is probably Chipping Norton. About two hours down the M1/A43/M40.

I was born in Derby, so I can say this with authority.

Bit of a commute, but there are nice villages around Melton Mowbray, but it's flat and boring.

There are, like where I live, and a quick glance at the map will show you it's far from flat! The Wreake valley villages are all lovely, bottom end of the vale of Belvoir is nice too, a bit far from Derby though.
It's flat my Yorkshire standards. wink

I know Wreake (Frisby, etc) and Belvoir very well - you can see Belvoir Castle from my inlaws house. Rubbish commute across Nottingham from the A52, unless it was out of peak hours.

These are good suggestions. I would include ticknall as well

Flat around Melton Mowbray? Try visiting! We live in a village 6 miles from Melton and the hills are there in abundance. Try Burrough Hils for instance.

Funny that Breedon on the Hill was mentioned, I was there this afternoon. It's been years since I visited. I chose the old road for a change instead of the Motorway coming back home from a daughter's birthday treat to Donington Museum.
Lovely place.

I used to commute to Sheffield from here, glad I now walk to the next village where my office is smile
Wreake or Belvoir? If latter did you ever get to the Chequers at Woolsthorpe?

Was thinking this. Parents have just moved into Matlock from Somerset, I quite like it over there very nice place and reasonably quiet.

Melbourne is a lovely village, and south of Derby as specified, but the downside is that it's on the Airport flight path (for take-offs, generally). As EMA is busiest at night and early in the morning, this could be a factor.

As others have noted, the best villages and nicest countryside are to the north and west of Derby, around the A6 and A 52 roads which lead to the Peak District via Matlock and Ashbourne respectively.

Blimey, lots of suggestions thanks!

Wife and I are taking the kids camping near Ashbourne, going to do a few walks and reward them with a day in Alton Towers.

We're basically looking for a small village/town, nice shops, decent eateries and pubs etc to wander around for an hour or so on the day we travel up.

My initial request was based upon my local area....Southwold is lovely, but it is a tad pretentious, but is nice for a wander.
