Problem is ,HEAVHO- the test is now a production line of doing things in the right order and failing to make errors . I suspect that any animal trainer could train a Chimp ( and my apologies to the intelligence of the Monkey family )to pass the practical aspect of a modern driving test. My latest example was a car in front of me today from the shops. First island- view good all round from safe stopping distance. That didn't matter- it stopped for a longish time to see path was clear. I'd already seen that on my approach. Even my wife ( who has about 40 years passenger seat time) had spotted that path was clear. Next over the island ,no indicators, the car moved to the right to occupy the outer lane,approaching traffic lights, with a right filter. Lights change, with no filter, but there's a gap in oncoming traffic. Car in front is sitting at lights and has not moved to turn right position . I spot another potential gap and ( having been positively peed off ) suggest they move into middle of road ( blast of horn)which after a wake up call they do . Next section is 20mph ,travelled at 10-15 with no obvious reason . However at mini island, they decide to shoot in front of a right turner. Something I'd have thought was a tad dodgy.
All something that our Battenburg mates would flag up as "in need of improvement" and stop the car to advise driver of need to improve. But, HEY,HO- we haven't got may trafpols today ( except on the TV reality programs), so we've got to put up with it. Some of us are lucky enough to have the expertise and experience to cope with this lot. We realise that we might have needed to improve our driving, but in those days ,we had experts in Police uniforms to educate and advise .These days the only standard of poor driving seems to be a speed ( it can't be called Safety,as it only measures speed) CAMERA.

Lovely factory fresh Bentley was being driven by a young lady in my area a few weeks ago. I meet her coming the opposite way down a tight suburban road and it is clear that someone will have to reverse as cars are parked on one side and there simply isn't enough room for both of us.
I start to reverse back to give her room to pass but she is clearly lacking in patience and I wince as she proceeds to smash both left side 21" alloys into the high kerb to mount it.

My father in law drags his wheelie bin down the drive when its been emptied by driving with one hand of of the window, the bin gently sanding all that nice smart Audi paint off, he has previous, he used to let his gun dog bounce round on the rear seats of his seven series and would pin notes to the dash with a pin into the surface, no corner unscathed, no wheel un-curbed. He managed to perch a BMW onto of a rock, thus putting an impressive bulge in the floor. If he has to drive a manual instead of his usual auto it usually involves a trail of cogs and stuff down the road.
Couldn't care less about cosmetic damage to Audis, what I find sacrilegeous is the descruction of anything even slightly old, rare or interesting i.e. the thousands of cars which met their end unceremoniously at the hands of the scrappage scheme... Not permitted for re-sale, no chance of parole, do not pass go or collect £200 but proceed directly to the recycling plant. Many of them perfectly good cars, and many of them endangered already.

Lowered suspension on cars that handle fantastically from the factory.
Mitsubishi Evo and VW Corrado are two that spring to mind. Not cool, and marks the owners out as purchasing the car for all the wrong reasons.
Women taking kids to school in huge 4x4s they don't need, and can't drive properly, because they want their child to be "safe".
People who hold trucks up on the inside lane of the motorway by driving at less than 56 mph.
Mclaren 12C owners, because I'd like one, but can't justify the outlay. Otherwise known as jealousy!

Near me in Royton is a large crossroads in the shape of a half open pair of scissors. When approaching it in the direction of Shaw and turning right towards Oldham, there is room for about three cars to the pass the lights and wait patiently for a gap/the lights to change without obstructing traffic approaching from ahead.
Normally people leave a car's gap behind which can be frustrating at this very busy junction but at least it's better than the imbecile I was behind the other day who waited to turn right with almost no gap between the back of her car and the line, meaning I had to wait another couple of minutes (yes I know, 1st world problems but I cry at the ignorance, not at the time wasted). of my life here.
I see a lot of red lights jumped at this crossroads, once by someone who realised they were in the wrong lane and hesitated for long enough to make them need to jump a red light and for me to have wait patiently.
In fact, while I 'm ranting, cars in the middle lane in the above situation who don't realise that if they pushed up a few centimetres I could enter the right only lane and make the next lights cycle...grrr.

Someone who once said "Yeah you have to change down for a really steep downhill to stop it going too fast"
Hmm, I'm impressed, this person doesn't normally care about their driving...then....

Basically she meant changing down (on a steep downhill slope) without matching the revs, bringing the clutch up and letting the road speed synchronise with the engine speed, thus making the car slow down as the engine speed was idle...
I do wonder how long the clutch/synchromesh will last on that car.
