More government action to 'improve our motorway' It would help if an 'education' plan was implemented to get idiots to understand the keep left rule for a start.

Couldn't agree more. Full and proper use of the road as it exists would be ideal. Shame people are too stupid to do so even if some sort of education program is put in place.
Instead all of us have bimble along at the lowest common denominator.
I don't go up there that often but do recall the M42 around Brum being like this and damned scary with no hard shoulder.

I quite agree, it would cost a lot less than the 632million quoted, and we all know how much ovrspend there is going to be on that, to pay for more HA employees to 'police' the MLM and advise them, esp the pillocks i saw on Sunday in L3 on the 4 lane section Also ,and i will draw up examples of this, is the cockeyed gantry signs for junctions esp on the M25. sometimes they show that L1 is exit only other times its still part of the M25, so the less educated drivers amongst us just sit in L2 so they dont get confused, IF the HA got its head out of its backside and standardised all junction signs it would cetainly go a long way to diminish the MLM.
Then make passing on the inside, if done correctly ie you are in L1, MLM in L2 (or three) and you pass them still staying in L12 is 100% legal
However throw the book at those who approach a MLM in L2 and they are in the same lane and go to L1 to pass, and do the weavers as well. Surely it isnt beyond the wit of the brian dead in the HA and driving orgs to get this implemented. I always thought the Hard Shoulder as there for safety?????
On BBC South the Transport correspondent said that this would enable more cars to use the Mway, YET the HA claims this will reduce emisions.
I wish they would mke their blooody minds up.

I occasionally take the m4 into London and there are other simpler adjustments which would help. The M4 to M25 exit being an obvious one.
It's a busy exit, every minute cars try to bypass the queue to leave and exit at last moment. Resulting in brake lights/ tailback and very common crashes .
Could paint a solid white line between inside lane and exit lane for half a mile before. Camera monitored. Cross the line = 3 points. Flow vastly improved...

It's all completely daft. In this age of modern tech, assuming that many people are commuting to do jobs that could be done remotely, couldn't the government do more to encourage companies to allow their employees to work from home more often to dramatically cut the amount of commuting traffic?

This, most people can do their jobs 2/3 days in the office and the remainder at home.I agree..........I commute from Newbury (M4 J12) to Staines (J4/M25) and now aim to work from home 2 days a week. The remaining 3 days I leave home at 5am and am in the office before 6am, leaving around 3pm to avoid traffic each time.
I've been doing this journey for the last 6 years, and it's only in the last year I've been able to WFH. However, during that time, I honestly have never really thought of the M4 as being a traffic nightmare, but I guess my hours of travel are different to most commuters.
What worries me though.........2 things:
1 - Most breakdowns mean pulling to the hard shoulder immediately. If you cannot make it to a "break down bay" that means you'll be blocking an "in-use" lane and the resulting traffic jam will be immense in peak hours.
2 - In the event of an accident, just how are emergency vehicles supposed to get to the scene quickly, if they cannot rely on the use of the hard shoulder?
Better lane discipline would go a long way to improving matters, and wouldn't cost over half a billion pounds. But even a change in the law doesn't seem to have had much of an impact.
However, resurfacing lane 1 would help. The ruts made by the lorries make lane 1 dangerous, in my opinion, as they cause awful tramlining in the dry and are bloody lethal in the rain when they fill with a couple of inches of water. More people might be inclined to use them then! The East bound Junction 8/9 is an area even I will move into the middle lane to avoid!
