been offered a 944 what should i look

I'd pay anywhere between £0 and £5000, but might need a few more details first.

Low mileage means nothing unless it really can be substantiated.

Look out for the porsche badge on the bonnet. If it says Renault, Volvo or Chrysler etc then it's probably not the real thing and I'd walk away.

I have an 83 944 and it's definitely a proper Porsche. I know this because whenever I have to buy parts for it my wallet cries.

LOL was hoping it would say lada or similar what I meant was is the engine a proper Porsche unit as again believe some are not its done 90k so sort of low miles

Yes it is a proper Porsche. There has always been some chat about whether the earlier basic 924 was a proper Porsche as it has a VW engine, but the 944 has a 'real' Porsche engine. Good luck with it

All 944s have a Porsche engine. Most 924s have a VW engine.

The 924 came before the 944, the 944 is a grown up 924, the 924 was originally designed for VW by Porsche. Apart from the engines, you could say that they are Porsches through and through but obviously some people rightly or wrongly have issues with a 4 cylinder inline Porsche.

If it's an early "square dash" car (with dashboard heater components etc off a mark 1 Golf) then I think it only has a 5 digit odometer - in which case assume it should be 290,000 but then ignore it altogether anyway and judge the car on its condition. :-)

Have a look on www.tipec.net there is a buyers guide there on 944s. As for a Porsche engine then yes the 944 is a pure Porsche design, the 924 is a VW/Audi block used in the Audi 100E as well as VW van but with a Porsche designed head. So still a Porsche engine in my book.

And also the odometer gears have a habit of breaking. I have no idea how many miles mine was broken for before I got it, fixed with a new gear from the states. I also have no history for it so it may have done galactic miles despite being left abandoned for 9 years. The majority of it has been overhauled now apart from the engine and suspension so it doesn't really matter to me.

If you want to know of what horrors lie beneath an early 944 that has been neglected for a long time I've had a thread running about mine but it was a looong road getting it back into any kind of decent state.

That only goes back to 2006 so won't help much, but like everyone's saying it should be disregarded when evaluating the car.
