I had a wheel and tyre damaged back in feb from a massive pothole.

Contacted the council regarding said hole on the 19/02/2014 who then repaired it later that week.
I have received this response:

"The first notification to the highways department of a problem at this spot was on 19/02/2014. The area was inspected on 20/02/14 by a highways superintendent who raised a works order which was completed the following day in accordance with the national codes of good practice, thereby satisfying our statutory obligations and granding us a defence under the same."

So long story short "unlucky you just happend to be the first person to report it"

Is there any comeback to this? Rather annoyed that I have just forked out £205 + refurbished wheel because their road conditions are rubbish.

They can't know where every pothole is. If you're the first to report it then for them to go out and fill it the next day is pretty good, IMO.

You did well to report it, and you've clearly prevented anyone else from damaging their wheels (not meaning to patronise you), but unfortunately no, there's not much more you can do. They're no more to blame for letting you hit an unknown defect than you are for actually hitting it. If it was a known problem, then a different story.

Sounds stty but that's how it is.
