Well today started fine with a good morning drive in the Gredge, eased onto the motorway following a truck pulling a low loader trailer bits of building site start flying off and then I see something resembling a half brick heading in my direction... nowhere to go with 3 lanes of traffic. Brick goes under the front of the car followed by a large bang from the drivers side rear. 100m further on snakey feel from rear and pull over onto slip road hard shoulder.

Rear drivers side tyre flat. Careful check of of the front and underside of the car no other apparent damage. Change the wheel for the space saver and careful drive to layby. Hopeful that the brick impact had just deflated the tyre or worst holed the tyre but no ... nothing so simple ...and my worst nightmare!

So on reflection a very lucky escape as it all could have been very different but it looks like the main part of the rim is toast!

So looking at options ... as well as a closure inspection of the underside of the car

That is absolutely terrible. If only you could have got the trucks reg no would have been very useful, but these things happen so quickly, it's not always possible. A ladder once fell off the back of a truck in front of me and I only just managed to avoided it. Probably because I wasn't going too fast and a bit of luck. I eventually caught up with the truck and gave the driver the remaing piece of my mind.

Lucky nothing more serious happened. It could have been a lot worse. You can always replace a wheel.

Jeez Chris, thats a lucky escape mate ! Sorry 'bout the rim, but it could've been a lot worse then that ! Unfortunately I see this kind of neglict on behalf of transports every day in the job, it is really beggars belief ! they simply do not understand the dynamic forces acting on vehicles and cargo.

Glad you're in one piece

I saw a stone fall off a lorry and head straight for my windscreen where it cracked it. No chance to move out of the way and I too wish I got the reg number. But it was only £60 excess unlike yours.

Another close shave - driving down the M11 I was wondering what was causing some swerving in lane 2 in front of me - until it was my turn - a bucket slap bang in the middle of the carriageway. Good job the Wedge is good at swerving too - missed that one!

Unsafe load is a bit more serious than a stone being kicked up. Time and place to plod, might be something on camera if on m/way

I hate when that happens... always in slow motion! I once hit a clump of scrap concrete that fell off something and went under my mate's V-12 e-type, he was not happy although fortunately not much harm done. Later, on a huge bridge, I had to go over a brake drum that fell off a scrap truck. It got caught on something under the JX-6 and ground its way over the bridge until we bounced it off. No place to stop, etc. No fun!

Can the rim be straightened? Grady

A few years ago there was a guy near the Zolder circuit who was able to roll out dents and lumps in wheels - so it may not be a write-off.

There may be someone near a race circuit near you, the fact that the rim is removable will help.

Have a word with a few racers who could give you tips - but you may not trust the wheel after the repair, many wouldn't.

Go and see plod with time date position and brief description of the alleged perpetrator. The police will have a camera over viewing it 50% of the time. If anything the bd might learn to tie/cover his load down in the future after a knock on the door

Thanks for all the comments folks ... was a nasty moment as they say!!

Have passed the info to the plod and will see if anything is forthcoming .. I will turn blue if I hold my breath as they say!

I know its horse and bolted, but I have ordered another in car cam for the TVR as I have one in the daily oil burner and it would have been useful!

I had just had the wheels refurbished yes so a pain!!! I am getting the guy that did the wheels to look at it and see if it can be done and safe to do so more to follow!

A check of the car shows a slight mark on the plate that holds the fuel pump and filter, looks like it missed it by half and inch yikes
