The rear exhaust mounting was replaced by me a few weeks ago by me but the new one had failed.
The brake pipes were hidden and go up over the fuel tank, they had signs of surface corrosion.
The front wheel bearings both suddenly got really noisy without any other signs of wear.
The car is very well cared for with a FSH.
It's immaculate, especially for a 10 year old car with 104k mls.
I'm not sure how I could have preempted the faults.

If it's just surface corrosion, clean the brake lines and paint them with black hammerite
Replacing them will be an expensive job as there's a hell of lot of stuff in the way. It's especially annoying replacing metres of pipe for the sake of 3cm corrosion!!

Yes that's all it was, 4-5cm of a small amount of white coating on the surface of the pipe.Replacing them will be an expensive job as there's a hell of lot of stuff in the way. It's especially annoying replacing metres of pipe for the sake of 3cm corrosion!!

They had to drop the fuel tank to replace it.
Bleeding the brakes was the lengthy part apparently.
In total, the job took about 4.5 hours.
If I'd crawled under the car and spotted it prior to test I'd have cleaned it off and if superficial I'd have rubbed a little grease or underseal over it.
I'd change all 4 wheel bearings now then you'll have another 106 k hassle free miles plus possible bulk discount.
Exhaust if its that bad to fail then likely the original so its had a good life the next will also last that long too so bit of a cash hit now but that's part and parcel of running an older car if you want known worry free monthly costs for a car get a brand new one get used and you should save a packet but sounds like the repair fund hasn't been maintained ready for this. - try to put it into a 0% balance transfer credit card and pay it off over x number of months spread out the cost OR as it sounds like its the wife's car get her to pay up

I guess it's done now. Just out of interest did they replace the brake line with copper?They had to drop the fuel tank to replace it.

I would normally do a lot myself but with 2 new businesses and 2 toddlers, time is very scarce.
To be fair YOUR car is expensive to run, that lot would cost me under half that but i drive an 90's shed MOT
