Anyone know why the rev counter (the needle at least) on a V8S goes round and round the clock as I start up ? Is this normal ? Or have I been on the magic mushrooms ?

Mine can be a bit erratic, it sits at 1000 rpm with the ignition off. Probably the variation in current as you turn it over makes the sensor play up.

As for the mushrooms, if the rev counter is moving with the ignition off start to worry.

That's normal, the needle is driven by a stepper motor and freezes at the point you switch the ignition off.

if I left the fan heater on my S when I switched off the ignition the clocks would whizz right around and stay in an odd position.

After gaining access to my S via the sunroof one night, I was suddenly surrounded by stepper motors, and experienced those rotating needles everywhere. The popping and banging in my head was connected to the wires I was chewing on, and by increasing my own RPM I bypassed the electrics - before I knew it I had a hovercar until the fan cooled me down enough to focus on the rev counter which helped me nagivate back home

I was in the tree with my radar microphone gun, looking on as my very cool every so handsome stunt double confidently strutted around the meet, impressing women with his big muscles and wowing men with his knowlege about cars
