What Car? Micro-commute

New job from Monday, suit & tie jobbie, just over 2 miles away which is great. Trouble is, I don't currently have a car (I have a van!).
So a daily, short commute would suggest a small engine petrol car, but I'd also like to be able to jump on the motorway if visiting clients (or family/friends) when required, plus not look too daft in a teeny car as I'm a big lad (having said that, I've always had a soft spot for the Abarth 500). Historically, I've preferred estates, but happy to hear some ideas. I have a yard (on scalpings) as off-road parking, but no garage if this is a consideration.
The directors drive an Aston and a Jag, so preferably not something too scabby to park alongside them (but obviously I'm on a lot less money). I'm ideally looking at around £7-£10k to buy outright if there's good value to be had, or use this as a down payment for something new on tick (but with a 3 month trial in the job, perhaps don't want to over-commit right now).

Hard to say without knowing your full financial details... but on the face of it financing a car during a 3 month trial at work would be pretty unwise.
I'd either be walking (or cycling) to work or buying a £1k runaround that I could trade back out of easily. Whether that was because the trial didn't work out, or because you were now confident the job was a keeper.

It's a busy B-road with no footpath most of the way, not ideal for walking, but probably will use my pushbike once I've settled into the role. It's all downhill into work and uphill home, so wouldn't be too red-faced on arrival at work.
I did actually look at the Twizy after seeing another thread on here, but I share the parking area with a neighbour and getting power to the yard would be a pain. Plus of course it rules out using it for longer journeys.

Hmmmm...how much Clio or Megane Sport can you get for your budget? New enough?2 mile walk each way is actually a fair slog every day, especially if you're wearing a suit and tie and wearing more formal shoes! 30 minutes each way for someone who walks reasonably quickly. I live a similar distance away, and I only walk to work because I can get away with trainers / jeans / t-shirt.. if I had to wear a suit and tie, I'd be in my car frankly!
