Chain question...

Can I use an HG designated chain on an IG drive train?

XT crankset states IG chiain only, so I fitted Shimano IG chain and its rusted to buggery after a couple of rides. Looking at changing it for a KMC chain but they only seem to be HG compatible, hence the question!

Cassette is 8 speed, so could I use a 9 speed chain? (seems to be far more choice!)

Clean your chain up. It should be fine if you've only used it a couple of times.

Sorta the point really bud. It was cleaned and lubed after the last ride, so I'm less than impressed with the amount of rust on it to be honest. Last chain didn't do this although i really can't remember the brand.

Just stick a sram 8 speed chain on with plated links. Cheaper chains are just bare steel. Available everywhere. If you have an 8 speed cassette, then use an 8 speed chain. 9 speed is more narrow and can cause issues with using it, especially if cassette and chainrings are worn and the teeth splay out a little.
