I was driving down the A380 this morning (Duel Carrageway NSL) and there is a section about 3 miles before it joins the main A38 to go to the M5 and Exeter where there is a speed camera.

Normally there is the usual collection of people braking from 70 down to 60 or even 50 but today I witnessed a middle aged woman in a beemer slam on brakes from 70 down to 30ish

I was about 7 or 8 cars back but one had to swerve out the way and 2 others almost got caught in the carnage.

After the camera she sped back up to 80 blissfully unaware of the carnage she had caused!

If I had caught this on camera - would this be sufficient evidence to prosecute? I only ask as I see this about 3 or 4 times a week around this camera (not that severe but sometimes!!)

They'd be more likely to prosecute the following drivers for driving too closely to the Beemer.

Idiots.

True and I totally agree.

And as a biker I am taught to expect the most odd and bizarre behavior from other cars. But in this instance braking for no reason with a clear road ahead apart from the gatso from 70ish down to 30 - there can be NO excuse!!!

Why not suggest to the Safety Camera Partnership that this is happening and ask them to put in a speed limit sign or a speed roundel on the road next to the camera?
It will help those challenged by the need to recognise a speed limit.

Without wishing an accident on anyone, wouldn't you just love to see the (inevitable) trial for this.

Prosecution (to the driver who hit braking car): Could you tell me what happened?

Driver: I was following the var in front a little too closely when the driver did an emergency brake from 70 mph down to less than 30mph.

Driver's Defence Counsel: (to the driver of the 'hit 'car): Why did you suddenly brake from 70mph to less than 30 mph?

Driver2: There was a speed camera.

DDC: but you said you were driving at 70 mph in a 70 limit, why did you then brake?

Driver2: There was a speed camera...oh!

I've done this myself, although not to such a degree. I've forgotten the speed limit and been driving at what I consider to be a safe speed for the conditions, when I see a camera and am forced to slow down to thirty just in case.

I try to do this by engine braking, not slamming on the anchors though!

Because they would put an NSL sign up and hardly anyone these days seems to know what that means!

About a mile back from the camera where there is a petrol station and a junction on each side of the carrageway there are plenty of accidents, however the camera is not sited near any of those... Its placed just over a hill where you dont see it until the last minute.

Funny that...

Why not just get the 'safety' camera team to fk off and do something useful.

1. You say you have seen it happen at this location before - perhaps you should have expected it.

2. How about someone with an engine seizure? That could happen anywhere and lead to the front wheels locking up until the vehicle is stationary.

Steve

Edited to add;...sorry if this came out too aggressive - I`ve just been wound up by diesel ed (not bogbrush? - my rrrrs) on another thread.

I did, thats why I was adequatly spaced from the car in front to deal with it. I witnessed the carnarge - I was not involved in it

The car slowed down (brakelights on) to 30 at the exact moment of the speed camera and the sped back off to 80. Highly unlikely but good idea

Especially if it ist like A66 und there is some confusion by good many as to whether it ist dual or single (clue..in the ....central reserve )

But some roads .. like A580 dual carriageway spell out the 60 mph ...but this is proabably because it ist so variable from 70-40 along entire length of dual carriageway from Liverpool to Manchester.

A14 ... NSL reminder appears ca 100 yards or so before the scam.

But.... then the encouragement should be to review the HC every so often....simple advert on telly could work wonders.....

Those old gems about dipped headlamps and weavering birds did hint at re-read of HC

Ach.... just over a hill .. where you would pick up the speed on the gradient und see it at last minute, check speedo und like Pavlov's dog ... brake to 30 mph.....

That ist what we are conditioning people to do, Steviebabes, mein Liebchen.... Automatic braking down to 30mph on sight of scamera regardless of speed lollipop.

It ist observed on every road up and down the country...

sounds like a reasonable plan to me - why not a great big sign a mile earlier saying "speed camera ahead, in a mile" or something? as they're aren't there to collect money surely this would be reasonable?

MMM, and if a person were to warn other drivers of a camera ahead (and of course danger), they would get into trouble. Funny old world isn't it!

Dip the clutch ?

That's what did when an engine went pop (more of a bang really - con-rod failure or similar) on me - gently came to a halt and pulled off the hard shoulder onto the verge with no drama.

Had similar yesterday in 30mph area. Lady in front who was doing 30, as was I, decided that to play safe she'd slam the anchors on down to about 15mph. What confused me was that she had been tootling along absolutely on the dot of 30 for about a mile and a half by that time.

Incidentally it's a cracking camera location in a new 30mph section. You know the ones, no side roads, grass verges about 20 foot wide, pavement to rear of verges and driveways to dirty great house every hundred yards or so. Then, no more than 30 yards past the end of the white lines it goes up to a 40mph.
