I am contemplating purchasing a 930 Turbo LE. The car is a 1989 with under 20k miles. The price of the car is 120k. I am unsure whether this is a good buy or sound investment. I am looking to buy a Turbo for limited miles usage and to hold on to for many years in the hope of an appreciation in value. As a limited number vehicle would you think this would be an ideal such purchase?

I presume it's the car at Hexagon Classics

I know it's a Limited Edition car but I think the prices of all IB's (Impact Bumpers) is high at present.

Hexagons cars do seem to be at the top end of the scale (but again that's down to mileage)

If you want to keep it and use it I would spread the risk by buying a nice standard 911 turbo and another car like a 911 Speedster.

Indeed it is the car at Hexagon that I have been looking at. My fear is that the car is highly inflated. I am also considering at standard Turbo if I can find the right low mileage example. Thank you for the advice.

Speaking personally I wouldn't buy as an investment at present as I do think the prices are inflated and could go down as easily as up. I think it's a bubble, others will disagree.

If you want a nice turbo from a private owner I'd suggest you join Impact Bumpers and PCGB and ask if anyone is interest in selling directly.

Good luck.

Cars have very rarely been an investment in the past; they're a means of transport that depreciates with time and wear. Very occasionally their prices start to increase, I guess this means they've been a good buy for a few lucky people. A long term investment - no. Maybe an increase in value will subsidise the ownership costs, maybe they won't.

As stunning as the LE is, much preferable to the SE, that is way over the top.

At that mileage, you would destroy any value in it by driving it so what would be the point of owning it?

See the 911 Turbo LE, scroll down and note that he sold it for £48k in 2009 with very low miles. I believe a Porsche dealer bought it from him.

That is a massive price for the one in question and agree that early classics are over priced at the minute

Thanks for the comments.
It would appear that this car is well over priced and I am swaying more towards a good standard 930 Turbo which I can enjoy the use of without worrying about depreciation in value through use.
There are a few excellent 930 Turbo examples about in the 50 - 60k region with around 50k miles. I have read many comments about 4 speed or G50. If a suitable car is available with a 4 speed would you recommend it or look specifically for a G50?

To be fair though, that LE looks utterly, utterly stunning.

And so it should.

If you are after a turbo at realistic money, I am aware of a nice standard condition rare 3.6 964 turbo (one of only 40 odd imported to the UK), black on black with around 45K miles that can be bought for around £90k. These babies have doubled in value in the last few years, and show no signs of stopping!
PM me for the details

You're leaving a lot of fun on the table if you're buying this principally as an investment; limited use over the years is neither fish nor fowl, since you'll have to spend money on it to get it driving properly, whether you do 500 or 5000 miles per year. The Hexagon car is clearly meant to be an investment purchase, to be stored away in the hope that the market continues to rise. It may or may not do that.

A few years ago I bought a 930 flatnose. Not a factory car, but converted using metal panels and very well done. So, nothing special, and not so valuable as to make you afraid to use it. I've had enormous fun in it, and continue to. It's a brilliant little thing and I have a massive soft spot for it. It's gone up in value nonetheless, I regularly get offers on it, but the bottom line is that it's both great fun, and as luck would have it, a pretty good 'investment''.

So, if it were me, I'd either buy some time capsule thing and forget it, or buy one of the diminishing supply of old cars and have some fun in it.

i've got a late 5 speed Turbo ('89) with 63k miles - the gearbox is very sweet and slightly improves the significant turbo lag issue one has with the 4 speed car. having said that i think if you have decided you want a 930 (ie plse drive one firstly, they are not everyone's cup of tea) the first priority in sourcing a car is condition and history. a lot of these cars have not been looked after and have been through the hands of multiple owners. so i'd focus of that first and vintage second. i did not set out to buy a 5 speed car (let alone a 930 to be honest), but when offered my car it turned out to be so nice and honest that i had to have it. good luck with your search.

You didn't by chance buy this from a chap called Vic Ferguson ?

The Hexagon car looks well over priced but that is Hexagon.

Best bet if it is a nice car is the black with black 964 3.6 turbo. That is were I would put my money

That's a lovely looking car. Do you use it daily or weekends? Its just the thing I am after for getting out of the garage on a Sunday when the sun is shining.
I am going today to look at a 1985 (4 speed) 930 Turbo in Guards Red with 50k miles which is at Hexagon. It seems they do demand top prices for their cars but they obviously know how to pick the very best examples.

it's been laid up over the winter - took it out weekend before last for it's first spring blast. gets a massive amount of positive attention. whilst i hear negative comments about Hexagon, it tends to be related to price fixing and over-prices, not the quality of stock. it might be a good idea to post on impact bumpers or the pcgb site that you are looking.
