OK now I'm absolutely furious. I was shopping around for insurance a few weeks ago as my policy expires on the 29th of this month.

On the recommendations of a few threads, I tried Liverpool Victoria and got a good quote. I let them know about the mods on my car (supercharger) and they were happy with the mods - apparently all modifications other than engine size increases were covered under the policy.

I got the quote in writing, which was delivered to me on the 10th.

I've just called to accept the quote and pay, and they have 'changed their minds' and will now not insure the car. Basically wasted my time and now I've got a mad rush to try to find someone to insure my car.

Not only do I think this to be unacceptable piss poor practice from LV, but any of you out there with their policies had better find out whether they are still valid... according to one of their managers, this is a 'change in business policy'

So, again, anyone know of a good insurer for a modified 993?

I seem to remember that if they quote you in writing and you take them up on it within the time period they stated. They have to honour their quote. This rule was designed to stop companies quoting low then changing it at the last minute leaving you with no choice. Check with the insurance ombudsman. I don't remember where I remember this from though.

lets get the message clear, they dont insure modified cars as per several threads posted.

other than that they are very cheap, dont insist on sat nav tracking devices nor garaging - which on a 60k+ car is flexibility its difficult to get elsewhere.

Horses for courses but for the average motorist I think they offer excellent value for money.

I have a feeling that Steve may be right, although they will still be able to cancel the policy giving you 14 days notice to find an alternative.

I think that LV are picky with drivers under the age of 30.

cyberface, how old are you?

30 - on the original call, they wouldn't add my girlfriend to the policy for exactly that reason. However they were very specific on the 10th that the mods were acceptable.

I'll check the quote again, but there's negative value in me forcing them to accept the quote if they can cancel within 14 days, and then not fully refund the policy.

Bennno - my beef is not with whether they should or shouldn't insure modified cars. My issue is that they clearly and repeatedly said they would, and issued a quote in writing stating this - only to run away at the last minute saying 'only joking'.
At the time of the quote, there were a few threads about whether LV were still doing the modified cars or not - I called just to find out since the evidence seemed to be equivocal. I was assured that this was a policy they always had.

LV insured my heavily modded Skyline and paid out when someone hit it.

They also insure my modded GT2, with areas modded noted on my policy and renewed without mention a couple of months ago.

But I am over 30 though!

Try Carole Nash, always seemed interested and realistic. Failing that there is also Adrian Flux who will insure almost anything unless it has a cage.

Correction will insure with a cage but charge a big premium for it....as per my LAD 205 MI-16.

Adrian Flux insured my everything modified 911 with cage for a pretty reasonable £800.

I had a similar disagreement with L&V earlier in the year when over the phone they quoted a price including trackday cover. When the paperwork arrived it wasn't included, so I phoned them and was told due to the value of the car they wouldn't cover trackdays. In the end I stayed with them on the basis they were half the price of my previous insurers. I agree with Bennno in that for straight forward porsche insurance for owners over 30, they appear to offer a very good value insurance policy.

Although it's dissapointing with the modded issue, clearly their underwriters must have felt some people were taking the pi$$. Eg there is a whole world of difference in risk between adding 15bhp by changing to a sports exhaust and adding over 200bhp!!!

Well I am over 30. Anyway, any firm that claims one thing on the phone to get your business, and then backslides when it comes to the crunch (as LV appear to have done with both yourself and I) is pretty damn poor.

I'll try Carole Nash tomorrow - Adrian Flux were ridiculously uncompetitive (£1953 anyone?). Otherwise it's back to Privilege at twice the price of LV's bogus quote.

Interestingly, even though the supercharger sounds pretty hardcore, if you do the numbers it's only a 17.6% increase in BHP. Insurers never ask about torque but I'm willing to bet that my 17.6% isn't that far off what some cars can get with a simple exhaust and filter change...

I don't think you will lose money - they should refund on a pro-rata basis.

I'm insured with Diamond Insurance (not the women's only insurer). I have a 911 SC that has a 993 Varioram engine fitted along with turbo brakes and suspension. lightweight flywheel, cone filter, H&S exhaust and some other bits.

I'm 30 and the car is parked in allocated off road parking in east London.

The policy is limited to 4000 miles with no commuting to/from work and I pay just short of £700.

I was originally insured with them when I met them at the Classic Car show at the NEC a couple of years ago - I think because they saw me at the show it meant that I was enthusiastic about cars and not some chav souping up his motor and likely to wrap it round a lampost etc and so gave me a decent quote.

Anyway, it could be worth giving them a ring - the number is 01442 825481. I think the car has to be at least 10 years old. Good luck.

Try chris wilkins @ Bickley Insurance (020 8773 8123). He insured my modded (& caged) 964RS with Norwich Union for a sensible premium. Please mention my name!!

I too am with Diamond (from Tring) and pay less than £6oo for a standard 993 C2. Restricted mileage & 4k miles per year. Worth a look Cyber. Have you stopped grinning yet?

Not wanting to worry you but my other half was insured with Diamond last year. Someone ran into her car and she set the wheels in motion with Diamond to get it sorted out. They were absolutely terrible... the claims department had to be chased regulary to do anything, they were full of excuses and it took far longer than it should have done. I hope for your sake you never need to go through a claim with them. I for one won't use them again.

As I am currently working with a client who is a major insurer, thought I would pose the question about accepting/cancelling policies.

In a nutshell, if they have quoted they are obliged to underwrite the risk, however, they can cancel the policy at any time as long as they give written notice and return the premium.

After all the suggestions here (thanks everyone!) I've had to accept the renewal from Privilege.

None of the others would quote; Diamond were very helpful on the phone but didn't call me back with a figure, and Performance Marque did quote but it was more expensive than Privilege.

I am fairly surprised by this - and I have absolutely no idea how you guys with proper fast Porsches and live in London get insured...
