At that price point they are all much of a muchness.

Tesco sell Blaxland Estate Shiraz which is perfectly good and is often on offer.

If you can run to buying a (mixed) case of 6 at a time, then I've found (as a wine numpty) that Majestic offers better buys than supermarkets at that price point.

Try looking at "syrah" wine too as its the same grape just the european name for it. Usually not quite as spicy though.

Thanks for the responses chaps. I will hunt down the Shiraz from Tesco - Just read the feedback on that particular wine and it scores very well.

Good advice regarding buying from the specialist wine suppliers too.

+1. We stocked up when Asda were selling it for £5, but now it's back to £7.50 or so. It's delicious.

You prompted me to check - it's £5.75 at Tesco online so I just ordered a dozen bottles (free delivery)

As has been said get yourself down to Majestic and get yourself two each of the following:

http://www.majestic.co.uk/search;pgid=N35EK3miQtJS...

http://www.majestic.co.uk/Luis-Felipe-Edwards-Sign...

http://www.majestic.co.uk/Wirra-Wirra-Scrubby-Rise...

The BVS is a big traditional Aussie Shiraz and is absolutely stunning. The Luis Felipe Edwards is a slightly lighter take on Shiraz (hence being called a Syrah) but being Chilean still has enough body to it and then the Scrubby Rise is a blend of Shiraz and Cab Sauv with a small percentage of Petit Verdot, it's big, soft and full of cassis and blackcurrant.

All of those should go down a treat without breaking the budget.

Kooliburra Reserve from Aldi. Excellent stuff at only £3.99. Even better in my view is the Shiraz Cabernet.

McGuigan Black Label shiraz from Morrisons (when they have it in stock) is the best shiraz I've had, smooth with a lovely flavour.

Wolf Blass and Barefoot are other good ones.

Amberley Estate Shiraz, Margaret River, Western Australia was one of the best I have tasted and does crop up over here now and again. Nice served chilled as well!

Thread resurrection:
It's £6 a bottle in Asda at the moment. Do try it.
