Afternoon,
Been looking into getting an e60 530d lately. Pre LCI, circa 2005/6 in the region of £6k.
So far, the examples I can find have sub 90k miles with good service history. I would preferably like the M sport, but the SE examples seem to have less mileage and look generally cleaner.
Been umming and ahhing over whether to go for auto or manual. Pre LCI Auto's look a but ugly (interior wise, obviously) and am not generally fond of Auto's in any car, so am swaying towards the manual.
Common probelsm I'm aware of are swirl flaps (which can be fixed and prevented). Any others I should be aware of?
Any recommendations as to what options to look for/avoid etc? Or indeed, any other recommendations instead of a 530d?

We have a pre LCi 530d too, it's on 170k with the auto box, still on all it's original parts, even the dpf hasn't blown up!
No trouble really apart from there's a relay which can cause a lot of electical gremlins like the car not starting or bringing up electical warning lights, we changed the relay for £10 and it's been sweet ever since.
The I drive screen is starting to look a bit dated but it's still a very nice car And wears it's millage very well
Eta you will not get more than 33mpg out of it, my mum drives like a nun with cruose control on and struggles above 30. They are fitting a tuning box to it which I can see will most likely cause some issues but my step dad won't be told. Time will tell as it's supposed to improve mpg by 6-8mpg which is still poor for a diesel but not bad for a car with 265bhp

My brother has an E61 2005 530d manual. He's had it for about 6 years and it's got over 100k miles on it now. He's not really had any problems with it, but had it de-flapped as a precaution. It's also been mapped since a few years and this hasn't caused any issues. He's recently had to get a brake pipe replaced.
I'm also an E60 owner (mine's a 2005 too, but a petrol one). One thing to look out for is condition of the suspension as at this age a few things are likely need a refresh if they haven't been done already. The rear arm bushes are well known for failing and it means new arms as unfortunately they can't be re-bushed. Mine had gone by 49k / 8 years. I think the next job on mine will be front wishbone bushes.
