Can anyone help me out with a few maintenance questions re E28 M5 please?

- Does the steering wheel adjust for reach / tilt? I've undone the lever below the column but nothings moving.

- My head restraints aren't moving, the electric motor is working but no movement

- Does anyone know of the best place to source parts (i.e refurb / secondhand / new discounted)?

- The instrument illumination seems very dim, even turned up full, is that normal?

cheers

Pull the lever right back until it goes loose and give the wheel a bang, it should come then. There is a geared wheel that runs against the headrest rod, the teeth may of gone or it may have dislodged. You should be able to get the seatback off if you undo a couple of screws at the bottom and slide the panel up.

No reach adjustment, just rake.

Dim instrument is probably due to old/blackened or blown bulbs in the cluster. Maybe the rheostat has issues so you're not getting full range of adjustment.

Headrest operates from a remove motor linked to a gearbox which moves the headrest, so if motor is operating then issue will be with the drive or the gearbox.

Previous poster is incorrect...

E28's are reach only, not rake. If the wheel does not move out when the chrome handle is down then try slackening the crush nut on the column, may have to remove under dash tray to achieve this. Once you have slackened it a 1/4 of a turn try pulling the wheel back. Often on these cars a "shimmy" from the front is "cured" by attempting this.

I found the wheel too high for my taste on my 635 CSi so I just popped a couple of penny washers in between the 2 13mm bolts that hold the column assembly to the dash frame. (E28 & E24 are the same car basically) That dropped the wheel the half inch I wanted it to be for comfort.

Try Fritz's Bits in Somerset for generic E28 bits.

The head rest problem is very common. Here is the fix.

I generally can source all parts from my main BMW dealer. Pretty much everything is still available, for the ///M specific stuff you will probably have to go through BMW and it is usually expensive. For generic E28 stuff then ebay is your best bet.

The steering wheel will move forwards and backwards but not up and down.

The binacle lights are usually very dim but if they are still very dim at night then you will need to replace the bulbs. This link might help. It is for an E24 but both cars are very similar.

May I ask what number your car is? condition and mileage, and if you are feeling very generous a photo .

The E28 section of the M5 board is a very good resource for these cars.
