Shetlands

I have won two tickets for ferry travel to Lerwick from Aberdeen. I think these are worth about £70 each and as far as I am aware only include the travel so no cabin or car or anything like that.

So not a brilliant prize really in the big scheme of things without paying extra for add-ons.

Might take the offer up but just wondering if anyone has been to Shetlands, what is there to see and do? (I am not into bird watching and nature reserves). Would a 2 or 3 day break and maybe hire a car there pretty much cover all bases?

Any input appreciated!

I was born there.

Very relaxed pace of life. Generally warm and welcoming people in pubs, hotels etc.

Lovely scenery, friendly, happy locals, but very little to do. I spent nearly two years on and off up there, "working" at sullom voe, and tried to fill my time by visiting different far flung parts of the island.

Nice museums in Lerwick and Scalloway, but the biggest attraction ended up being the pubs

The scenery is the best part - go out to Eshaness where the "dancing pony" advert was filmed. Nothing between you and America. Some of the big rocks on top of the cliffs there were thrown up by the sea...

Up Helly Aa is well worth seeing too, but it's the last Tuesday in January

Sitting along side in Lerwick just now, mostly wet cold and no tree's pubs are full of men ( if that is you're bag you're on to a winner ). Not my top holiday destination choice.

Flew into Sumburgh once to do some work for BP at the airport, job took 30 minutes, I took the next flight out. Total Shetland time - circa 3 hours.

Weather was st. People seemed friendly.

Not a great deal of help I know.

I love it up there, work two weeks on a month, people are friendly and the scenery is stunning. As others have said, there's not a lot of attractions per se, but as a place to just drive around and admire the views, it's amazing.

Damn scary place! The waves hit those cliffs hard!
