Hello,
Might be buying a 1968 series 2 Landy. It's got an 1986 number plate on it as it spent its early life on a national trust estate so wasn't registered for the road until the 80's.
Is it possible to change the plate for a 1968? Also would it still be taxed as a historic car due to late registration?

Thanks

Ian

Tax status depends on date of manufacture, not registration, so the Landy will be tax free. Also, it is fine to put a 1968 plate on the car once you have done the DVLA admin. You can't put a plate on a car that suggests a later registration year than the actual one (this is to stop people passing off cars as younger than they are), but you can show an older plate. A car registered yesterday could have a plate from 1960, for example. A car from 1960 could not have a 2014 plate.

PS: This will be a Series 2A, and they are fab! I have had a 1976 Series 3, and would like a 2A, but can't afford one!

What that jolly old chap said before me.

You might need proof of the year of manufacture if it's showing as a '86 on the V5. But that's all.

Thanks for the quick response. I had a 300tdi which I sold (bad mistake) love the 2a look with the lights also tax free. As long as it's half decent underneath, I've bought it!

Coolio! I cannot remember whether the all synchro box had come in by 1968, or whether it was still crash, bang wallop at that date. Frankly, even the later ones are crash bang wallop, but that's part of the charm.

It can be fun (sort of) to get underneath in order to spray Waxoyl and slap on Hammerite. There is fun to be had up top as well - brush painting the scabby bits of an old Landy with a slightly mismatched shade of green is always a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Hope the purchase works out OK!

Is it possible to have a plate reregistered from say a vehicle that was scrapped, for example my old audi and have it assigned to your current vehicle if it meets that age related requirement?

I can understand why you would like an age related plate.

Unless corrected, I am pretty sure that the rule that you cant put a current year registration on a used vehicle, even at first registration also applied in 1986. So perhaps either in 1986 it was declared new (even though it wasn't new since it had been used on the estate) or someone has "played" with its identity in the past and used a more recent V5 relating to a different vehicle.

My approach would be to look very carefully at all the chassis numbers etc on the car and do as much as you can to check all is in order and that it is definitely a 1968 series 2 before you approach the dvla. Otherwise you run the risk that they will declare the car of unknown origin and put it on a q plate, which you may find far less acceptable than remaining on a 1986 plate.

Perhaps I have too much caution here but to me it seems very unlikely that the national trust would own a vehicle like a Land Rover that they cant (because it wasn't registered and taxed) use on the public road for 22 years

The story sound plausible to me. These old Landies were work tools, not road transport in many cases. A Landy could live entirely off public roads, on a large estate, for example.

Once a car is scrapped off, the registration plate is then removed from circulation and cannot be re-issued ever again. (Previously discussed here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=129... )

Sounds entirely likely to me, especially on an estate with huge acreage

There was a period in time when if you registered an import in the UK, you got the age letter that was current at the time. I bought a car that had been first registered here, taken to Jersey and re-registered there as J+five numbers, then imported to the UK. The number then was YOX three numbers T yet the car was made in 1972.

In 1989 I rebuilt it, and with the help of the Glasgow local DVLA office, got it put back to PWP three numbers L.

My understand is this was not that uncommon but nowadays you'd get a number that tied into the year of manufacture at the outset.

Slightly OT but I have an itch to scratch in doing a backdate on either a Jag XJS or a Range Rover and when finished put on it an older plate but from a specific area, e.g for the Jag I'd love to have one with the original rubber bumpers and have it look like a 1975 model.

For this I think it would look great with a plate similar to the press office models so something with say a VC, HP or KV area code. Do you reckon the DVLA would sell me an unissued plate from that area?

Take a look at the official DVLA website http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/ which even provides a very useful search bar to search for number plates. I typed in VC and it brought up plenty of options...

Pretty much all of those types of registration plates will have been taken out of circulation by now due to cars being scrapped off.

TBH, you're going to be very lucky to find the sort of registration plate that you want.
