Welshname's Monaco 172
Discussion
Thought I'd keep a thread going on here,
All the below is copied and pasted from another forum so apologies if it seems a little disjointed.
So nearly 4 years after joining I've finally got myself a 172 in Monaco. For now this thread will be just full of general maintenance crap and nothing that interesting.
So to start I went to view the car on Sunday in Ibstock (220 mile round trip) and didn't have much hope for it as I've seen a fair few of these now and they've all just been polished turds. This one however was really straight outside and had a lot of history with it. The car seems to have been well looked after although there were a few mechanical niggles. I paid for it (£1600 which I thought was fair), took the keys and the logbook and drove home.
Last night my dad drove me down there to collect it and we had a bit of fun on the way back up the M6 toll.
So the car:
2003 Monaco 172
80,000 miles
Not quite full service history
Blowing exhaust
Belts not due for a year yet but the invoice from the garage previously was questionable (see below)

Apologies for the horrific phone pictures, it was cold.
I've got a long list of little things to do along with some bigger items that need attention which is as follows:
Cam belt kit - ordered
Aux belt kit - ordered
PAS Pump - collecting this week
Crack rear light - done
Swap washer jets for mist items - done
Replace the brakes all round
Fix stupidly high handbrake
Replace passenger side headlight washer
Fix blowing exhaust (will be replaced in the next month) - done
Fix cigarette lighter socket - done
Aero wipers
Restore passenger headlight
RenaultSport Mats
Interior light bulb - done
Drivers door sensor - done
Dogbone mount - collecting this week
I know that seems like a really long list but a lot of it is very small easy things and as you can see I've done quite a few tonight.
So rear light before:

Bodged exhaust repair:

Not sure you can see but it looks like black silicone, it got progressively louder on my way home so I've removed it all and gummed it up properly. Just waiting for it to set a bit as the first time it blew through again (no pictures as my hands were covered in the stuff), then I'll start the car and let it run the exhaust up to temp.
This weekend I'll be tackling the PAS Pump and both belt kits. Fun times!

So anyway, as I said the PAS Pump is properly ropey:

Tonight I decided to start stripping down the front end ready for the belt change at weekend. The weather is forecast to be pretty poor on and off so I want to make the most of the good bits of weather to be doing the important stuff.
Started by getting the front bumper off (which took an absolute age because I couldn't get the drivers side bolt out of the wing). Followed by the slam panel and the headlights.

Slam Panel and Bumper off by welshname, on Flickr
Then drained the PAS Fluid which was completely black

Black PAS Fluid by welshname, on Flickr
Then decided to take the upper inlet and airbox off

Inlet and Airbox off by welshname, on Flickrr
Quick inspection of the end seals (no idea what they're actually called) to find they're leaking

Leaky Seals by welshname, on Flickr
Quick check of the throttle body showed some oil around the outer lip (is that normal or does it appear to be breathing a little heavily?)

Throttle Body by welshname, on Flickr
And that's all I managed to get done. A friend popped round so ended up chatting to them for an hour so didn't get anything else done.
Tomorrow I plan to take the PAS Pump off (so aux belt and tensioner naturally will come off also).

You've got to be very careful where you get your belts done.
A lot of garages don't have the correct timing tools or will use a cheap belt kit etc. I'd reccomend if you're not up to doing it yourself or don't have access to the renault tools then I'd see a specialist.
The kit I've got is a Gates kit. They are actually the manufacturer for all of Renaults kits so it's OE quality. The kit was £70 and was on eBay. Same with the aux kit, although that's a genuine renault item as that was the cheapest I could find.
If you go on cliosport.net you'll be able to find a list of traders and see which is closest to you. It's a very helpful site and one that I've been a member of for about 4 years now and I was a complete mechanical retard when I first signed up, now the only jobs I won't do on my own car are ones I don't have the tools for.
A link to the kit I got from eBay though if you are going to buy a kit and get a garage to do it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370740274601?ssPageName=...

The two covers that you say are leaking are the cam covers which need to be replaced when changing the timing belt, aux belt and ideally dephaser if you can afford it.
I hope you have the correct timing tools as if the timing is incorrect you can lose power.
As for the invoice regarding the work, thats just too cheap for what was carried out.

Yeah I know what they are, I just didn't know their correct name.I hope you have the correct timing tools as if the timing is incorrect you can lose power.

And don't worry. I know all about the timing etc. And yeah the invoice was far too cheap hence why I'm doing all the work a year early. I only got the car on Monday night
.Aux belt kit has turned up today thank god. Last piece of the puzzle so I can crack on this evening/weekend.

Very nice, looks just like mine!
Can I ask you which car did you use the mist-washer jets from?
Citroen C2 is the car they're meant for. They're brilliant, so much better than the standard clio items. I used them on my 1.2 also. Can I ask you which car did you use the mist-washer jets from?
Pretty sure I used these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-genuine-Fiat-mist-t...

Nice one thanks very much. I assume it's a simple swap job?Pretty sure I used these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-genuine-Fiat-mist-t...
Hope you enjoy the car as much as I enojy mine. Not too many Monaco's left
They're really easy to swap over, just a little fiddly.
No pictures this time but got on with stripping the rest of bits down tonight. Pas pump off and swapped over (took over an hour just to get that done, was a nightmare to get off, then a nightmare to get back on.) Took ages and ages to get the new one on until I realised if I put the top bolt in I could tap it round that as a pivot point.
Got the top and bottom belt covers off but I'm now stuck as I can't find my torque wrench. Going to have to either buy another or borrow one. FML.

Well it's been a long weekend but the car is all back together and running really well. Very happy with it.
On a little plus too I was putting the car back together and saw what looked like a "G" on my brake lines. Decided to give them a quick wipe with my hoodie and to my surprise:

Hidden Gem by welshname, on Flickr
I've got braided lines
great news as it was on my list of things to do eventually. They were that manky that they looked like standard items.
Plan is to just drive the car until the end of the month (pay day) which will give me a chance to give it a shake down and see what's what, figure out any little niggles I need to address. Also it'll be getting a big service then too.

Bit of a slow one at work today so got a list together of things I want to do/purchase next month:

Nice little 172 there! Nice colour for it too, but different from the silver ones I've normally seen!
That little engine looks so much better without the plastic cover on it too!
Keep the updates coming!
Thanks. I love the colour, it's why I spent so long looking for one as my search was limited to this or a black ph1. Also the engine cover will come off at some point. Rocker cover and inlets need painting first. That little engine looks so much better without the plastic cover on it too!

Been eyeing up what I want to order for the car. I've come up with the below list. I know a lot of it isn't really necessary but I want to do it the right way round, get the car tidy and mechanically spot on, and then start with mods.
My list so far is as follows:
Brakes
Front Brembo HC discs
Front Ferodo Racing DS2500
Rear Renault discs
Rear Brembo OEM pads
Ate Superblue
Rear disc spacers
Rear hub nuts
Service Bits
Renault Type D Coolant
Oil filter
Sump plug
Washer
Gearbox sump plug
Washer
Air filter
Pollen filter
NGK Spark Plugs
Engine Oil
Gearbox Oil
Misc Bits
Headlight Washers
RenaultSport mats
Both handbrake cables
Rear wiper
Cup splitter
Upper engine mount
Battery terminal cover
Rear number plate light
I've got prices from people for the above and it's floating around the £800 mark. Unless I change my mind on a few bits (e.g. cup splitter) then it will all be ordered on Monday
should be busy next weekend!

First up we did the brakes. Ferodo DS2500 pads up front with Brembo HC discs. Brilliant imo. At the rears I've got Brembo OEM replacement discs, bearings and pads and flushed through with ATE SuperBlue.

Then did a spot of headlight correction as they were in a sorry state. Clio's suffer from UV damage due to being plastic and these have seen better days.

It's a K-Tec Stealth Super Sport which is the unsilenced version. A little bit too loud but more on that later.
So after that I just got out and enjoyed driving the thing. Brilliant car for the money and I'm not sure what else matches it in the vs Enjoyment category. I'm lucky enough to live near some very nice roads to drive around Dovestone Reservoir which is my favorite place to drive locally.

Then to set my mind at ease after doing the cambelt I took it to EFI to have a dyno print out to show if it's making the correct power. 172's do NOT make 172 BHP, they never have and never will as standard on an accurate RR. The usual figure for one with an RS Tuner map (flash map with a 98RON fuel map), decat, exhaust and induction is around 164 BHP. I achieved this:

So I gave the car a good going over with a DA and LOTS of Zymol Glasur. Lovely stuff that my friend Ed let me try out. Will have to invest in some for myself I think.

So after that so far I've ordered:
- 172 Cup shocks (front and rear)
- Centre silencer for the exhaust
- Prima Racing Exhaust mount
Currently waiting on some cooksport springs to be in stock and to order some hubcentric spacers all round.
And that brings us up to date.
Cheers for reading.

So parts have started to arrive. I've ordered the following so far:
- 25mm M.A.D Spacers
- 15mm M.A.D Spacers
- Extended wheel bolts

- Silenced K-tec Stealth centre section
- Prima racing exhaust mount
I think that's everything. It's all started to arrive anyway. Just waiting on finding some cooksports. Bedroom is starting to look like a sorting office.

I have a near identical Monaco blue 172 I picked up last year - cracking little car and very little can touch it for cost/thrills ratio! I've got the same issue with the knackered headlights...what process did you use to get them crystal clear? I assume wet/dry to get rid of the pitting, but did you use an electrical polisher or similar to get them clear? Just concerned I'll wet/dry them down and not be able to get them clear again!!
