Rolling tax exemption is back!

I didn't hear this mentioned yesterday, but I saw a snippet in the paper today. Sure enough:

VED: classic vehicle exemption – The government will introduce a rolling 40 year VED
exemption for classic vehicles from 1 April 2014. (Finance Bill 2014 and future Finance Bills) (39)

Indeed it is and very good new that is to me because many of my classics are becoming exempt which certainly helps. As each year goes by (so long as I stay alive) even more savings will be possible. Hurray!!

Yes, very good news as long as it doesn't get killed off if the other lot get in next year, as it did in Gordon Brown's first budget. I'm just hoping I can get to historic status before anyone gets a chance to interfere again.

I have feelings of De-ja-vu about this. Many years ago, at the point the rolling road tax thing picked up 1972 cars, I bought a 74 MGBGT and thought to myself, in two years I will be tax free, then New Labour arrived!

Now I have a project 79 Scimitar, so in about 5 years it will be exempt, unless Labour get in again!

I worry a little that we might find the future movements of our cars controlled by their free tax discs.

You mean by their VED-free status, no one will have tax discs soon. I share that worry as other European countries have quite draconian restrictions placed on the use of classic cars.
