So I've been driving a transit for 3 months...

I moved to Austria for the ski season, and part of my job is to drive a ford transit around. There is a LWB and a SWB. Both are underpowered diesels, the SWB being slightly nippier than the LWB.
Both are horrific. Uncomfortable, loud, generally not the sort of thing you want on a motorway.
I'm not going to say that they are bad vans. As far as vans go, they are great. They fit 9 people, plus their ski equipment, without the slightest drama. The radios work, and they give you the perfect seating position to shout obscenities at Austrians.
But, they are still vans.
I came home for a couple of days, and I just took my e39 for a quick spin to make sure the old boat is still in good health.

k me, its a bloody good car. Everything from the seating position to the throttle response is absolutely perfect. I don't think I noticed before because I previously had an e46 and an e34, so I've been somewhat spoilt. To say I giggled like a schoolkid when I drove it around the block is an understatement. My triumphant laugh would have put Mussolini to shame.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is this. Don't bother getting a new car. Just use a transit for a while, your old car will feel a lot better afterwards!

Most older vans are crap because they are designed to be cheap. It's different now, the vivaro we have is silent nice to drive and has loads of kit.
The transporter sport line we had was the best of the bunch, twin turbo v6 with a remap full leather etc.
On the other hand the combo I used to have in work was awful much worse than the corsa it's based on, changing companies and getting a golf was a god send

I had a Galaxy with the TDCI 140PS engine as an insurance supplied hire car for three weeks while my Mondeo was away having a bumper fixed and boy did it make me appreciate it when I got it back. Ok so the Mondeo is hardly any kind of sports car but it handles pretty decently and the difference between a rattly gutless 4-pot diesel people carrier and a creamy smooth torquey 5-pot turbo petrol car is night and day.
