Booze. Is it THAT bad...
Discussion
Hi all.
Following up on a post from another thread, I was just wondering what your opinions are on big drinking sessions say every 3 or 4 weeks.
I'm not talking about the known negative health problems of drinking too much but I'm talking about how much it affects gym performance.
For myself personally, I always thought it was a massive no-no due to the sheer number of calories in alcohol. But how efficiently does your body process the calories? I can easily get 2000 cals of beer in me but other than a kg or 2 of bloat the next day it doesn't seem to have an adverse effect on my training or body composition. 4 nights in Magaluf last year (classy, I know) didn't have a detrimental affect either.
Am I not drinking often enough to notice the problem (ie an indian takeaway every 3 weeks I doubt is going to be a game changer if everything else is in check)? Is it that people tend to scoff a kebab and a cooked breakfast the next morning on top of not training due to hangover?
Also I've heard bro-science saying it severely reduces testosterone levels and actively prevents muscle synthesis for days?
A bit of an incoherent post as I was typing as the questions popped into my head but I thought I'd gauge your opinions on how compatible the pub and gym are.

Well, from a training perspective, it's extra fuel. But if you train just after drinking then I hope your training doesn't involve anything requiring good coordination. There's nothing wrong with calories as such. Sure, quality etc.
Always train before drinking for the reasons listed above. Except for once a 5am in a 24hr gym in Nottingham. I do not recommend it...I quit drinking completely 3 months ago. After about 4 weeks I found I had so much more stamina and endurance when training. Particularly swimming. I took 34 seconds off my 400m time between 18th Dec and 9th March and didn't train much over xmas and drank loads. Quit on 1st Jan and noticed huge difference in training.
