Hey everyone, I booked a trackday at Bedford when I had a GTR, now I've swapped the GTR for an GT3RS.2

Bedford has a 101db limit, the track day is tomorrow, is it worth me going?

I can't speak from experience, but I've been led to believe they are around 103db static in stock form.

You might be ok but do not use the Sport button.

Hi I've taken my 7.2 RS to Bedford twice with no problem. Static test: dip clutch, air con off and use the valve bypass trick to keep all three silencers in play. I registered 100.9 dB. Drive by was fine as long as you short shift the last few hundred revs near the noise meters if in close proximity of other cars.

They do seem to vary a bit though, so be careful if you're not willing to risk it. I was pushing 105 at brands even with the tips as above.

Steve at JZM showed us a little fix with a bit of rubber pipe that keeps the exhaust bypass closed. Really cool and we used it and got measured at 98dB static at Coombe. If you PM me I'll give you a phone number and explain how to do it (well my mate will). Takes two minutes to put on and take off...

let us know if you pass.

You will still fail if they are diligent in checking. You get at most 2 dB reduction from a 104/105 dB static test.

try asking them to let you go on because the engine is hanging out back, a static test is unfair and what matters is the drive by anyway. If you fail the drive by, they can send you home. It worked for me at brands last time out.

Passed the static test, was warned later for making too much noise, and eventually kicked off the track for noise, got till about 3PM before they'd had enough :O)

Good job :-)

What readings did you get on the static test?

I took my 997.1 GT3 to bedford last year on the GT circuit. Static test without sport button on was 100.9DB - and I think they were "generous" to me. I had a word with the organiser after the breifing to say I was on the limit and this worked well. However, I did find I had to short shift and use partial throttle when near the 4 microphones positioned around the track - pretty easy to spot. I got one warning board shown mid afternoon and had to make more effort not to be on full throttle particularly once my car was past the microphones - ie exhause aimed at the microphone! In the end I found this irritating and am unlikely to take the car back to bedford as a result as it just interupted the flow too much - personal choice!

My suggestion would be to have a discussion with the staff to say you know you are close to the noise limit and then they are more likely to work with you. Then, do be respectful of the microphones, if you trip the limit they are obliged to show you the door.

Yeah I was short shifting after being shown the noise board a few times, when a chap in a GTR decided to try to put some distance between me and him I stopped short shifting and overtook him after half a lap, then was promptly black flagged for noise!

Well worth it though ;O)

Might be a foolish question but im naive to this as ive not really got the car/had the opportunities yet - why are track events so strict on noise limits? Bedford isnt exactly surrounded by houses...

It's an old issue... have a look at the following (good) editorial from Autocar
