Polo Gti 6N2 Gear Box 'Loose'

Hi would appreciate some advice. First of all I know all about the 6n2 gearbox issues and the fact they are like 'chocolate' in some people's experience. My issue is that the box in general feels loose in and out of gear, and has since I have owned it. It kind of feels like it could fall out of gear, never has but that's the feeling it has. For reference I have never had any issues finding a gear, in some ways it almost feels too easy. But it got me wondering if this is normal in this box? Or is it a sign of a failing box and a fault with the 6n2's? Or just something which can happen to any box and is an easily solved issue? Any ideas over what it could be because I want it 'tightened up' at a garage, however don't want to go in blindly and be told things need doing which don't. Thanks in advance.

I never got on very well with the box in my old 6n2 gti- it did feel imprecise, especially when shifting into 2nd and 4th if I recall correctly. I never jumped out of gear, but I know what you are referring to as it was sometimes hard to tell if it had engaged. I was nervous that it might be a sign that the box was on its way out, but was reassured that it was quite normal.

So not much help I appreciate, other than to say it does sound like it may be a case of "they all do that sir". The 6-speeder in the lupo gti was supposedly much better.

Thanks for the help mate it's good knowing it might just be the way the gearbox is rather than a sign of failure!

Mine was the same, like stirring a bowl of custard filled with marbles. Signs of failure are crunching sounds and whirring coming from the box.

Shame they fitted such a ste box as otherwise its a cracking little car.

Try replacing the gear linkage bushes, don't know what the set up is like on the polo but it worked wonders on my old Volvo, removed all the sloppyness in the gear stick (it was so bad I couldn't get it into 5th)

I was thinking linkage. On old golfs, replacing bits of the linkage used to sharpen the feeling of the boxes up no end. Not sure if the 6N2 mechanism is simular. Probably £40 parts cost and 0.5-1.0 hours labour.
