I don't know whether I'm massively out of touch, having not insured a car in 5 years, but some of the quotes I'm getting for a car I'm picking up later today are ridiculous. My profile isn't too bad, but I haven't had a single quote less than four figures:
- £1,000 car
- Parked on quiet road in central London
- 32-year old married guy, good job
- Zero NCD
- No commuting use

The usual comparison sites are offering me TPF&T premiums above the value of the car (with the cheapest from Admiral/Elephant), and Adrian Flux couldn't get theirs below £2500(!).

Can anyone recommend a broker/provider off the beaten track who might be able to look after people with my profile. Grateful for any help.

All the insurance computer sees there is "Cheap car... central London... No NCD = ££££s"

Tesco and Admiral give me the best quotes @ around £600-700 for
  • sub £1000
  • 1400cc cars
  • in Medway Kent,
  • No NCD,
  • 5 years as a named driver
  • full comp
(my 4 cars never lasted long enough to earn any NCD).

Zero ncd and London are not in your favour. The fact is worth £1000 is less important than the damage you might cause to others, is the car popular with learners who claim a lot?

The value of the car will have little bearing on the premium. The potential cost of damage to third parties is the main concern.

London and no NCD is going to be your biggest problem.

Your location seems to be the problem

I passed my test 2 days ago and am doing insurance quotes for similar value cars

As stated, London is your big issue here, it doesn't matter if it's a quiet street or not when it's in a big steaming crime ridden turd. My insurance went down £300 moving out smile Have you tried somewhere still within the m25 that's got a different rating? When I moved from Ealing to Ruislip my insurance went down about £50-£100 iirc. Failing that sell your car and just use zipcar when you want to get out? It won't help your NCD but it will help your experience part.

Easily some of the worst advice I've ever been given... Thanks for that.

Try getting a quote for Comp. That might work out cheaper, as some insurers seem to equate people asking for tpft with either cheapskates who cut corners and are a worse risk, or poor people who are desperate for money and are more likely to make a fraudulent claim.

TPF&T costs a lot more for old cars than comp with a massive excess so try that. The Meerkats also get upset by cars valued at under £1000 so try upping the value to £2000 to see what happens.

A broker probably isn't going to help in this situation. Most tend to specialise in covering more exotic stuff or giving a higher level of service. For a cheapo normal car you'd be better going to one of the off-the-shelf solutions as that's what they specialise in doing.

Sadly the fact that it's parked on a street in central London and not used for commuting, thus not moving during the day, won't work in your favour.

Insurance is a risk-based contract ergo there's a lot more risk someone will crash into, walk into, vandalise, steal or otherwise damage your car than they would mine (as it's parked on a private driveway in a suburb in Colchester).

So you are far more likely to claim than the average driver, because of the fact that you are in a densely populated urban area. It's not just you, it's more likely that you'd be the innocent party in an accident too!

So disregard the driving record for a sec. You can't change the postcode so sadly it sounds like you're stuck with a high premium. I can't really see no claims bonus or whatever making much difference - the environment you live and drive in is more likely to generate an insurance claim.

Not really helpful for your situation, but there are plenty of silly quotes out there.

I was quoted £650 to insure a £200 banger we bought for a cheap car challenge, from the same company that charges me £820 to insure the Ferrari. Go figure! confused
