I had a new set put in my old SEAC, think they came from V8 developments, but didn't have to replace the shaft. A couple of the steel seats were braking-up and one had broken completely causing a tappety noise most people said was the cam. The cam was actaully in good condition so I left it. Hope yours warranted the extra work unlike mine.
Hi Campbell
Last year I changed mine (4L Chim) but went the other way on advice from here from the likes of shpub. The arguments for steel seemed good to me. I had a loose insert in the existing alloy ones. The complete rocker assemblies came from V8 Develpopments & were well priced at the time. I've since got a tappety cam (40k miles) & wonder if I either screwed up with the preload or it's a case of they all do that sir. Or do the steel rockers put extra load on the cam? I wouldn't have thought so as its the spring compression the cam is acting against.
When you changed the cam (as I'm going to do mine) did you renew the bushes? If not, how did you determine if the clearance was still within tolerance? It's an engine out job to do the bushes isn't it?
Cheers

Thanks chaps for yoiur help.
I found you can get the alloy rockers form my local landrover spares dealer off the shelf, they were only 20p more than the steel ones, about £100 quid in total with VAT, the shafts are ok so they have been rebuild and are ready for instulation.
Mike if you have a tappety it could be the cam its self, take of the rocker covers and inspect the finger followers to see if any of the steel plates are missing and if you can get some one to turn over the engine with the ignition coil unpluged and watch for any large gaps appearing between the top of the valve and the finger, or it could be a faild tappet.
When you tale out the cam you will see if you need to change the bushes, just see what kind of condition the bearing are in, if they are smooth no score marks or signs of heat discolouration the bearing bushed will be fine, also but the new cam in and if it feels tight this also is a good sign.
Hope this helps
Cheers
